Seoul Subway, Line 1 서울 지하철, 줄 1

I stayed in a hotel in Songtan for most of my visit to South Korea. Songtan is on Line 1 of the Seoul subway system. You get on the subway and after an hour to an hour and a half, you are in the center of Seoul. It's that simple. It is about 32 stops from the Insadong area, however.

Now getting back to Songtan from Seoul is much harder. From the Insadong area, you ride the Line 1 to the Guro stop. There, the Line 1 splits. One leg goes towards Songtan and one leg goes toward Incheon. More than once, I got on the wrong subway car and went a few stops toward Incheon before I got off and got on the right car. Unfortunately, I can't tell you how to get on the right subway car. At the Guru stop, you have to look outside at the signs in the subway station and make sure that the next stop is on the way to Songtan. If you go the wrong direction, you just get off the subway and head back to Guro. You might lose 10 to 20 minutes at the most.

Once you get past Guro, it is smooth riding to Byeongjeom. There, the line divides again. One set of tracks goes down one stop and they clean the train there. The train will sit there for 20 to 30 minutes. Then, it heads back to Seoul. You want to be on the train that goes towards Songtan. Again, I can't tell you how to get on the right train. I did notice that if almost everyone got off at Byeongjeom, then you should get off too. Once you get off the subway car, you can make a quick connection to go towards Songtan.

Now, all you have to do is sit back and wait for the Songtan stop. Unless...........you get on the express subway that doesn't stop in Songtan. This is also a line 1 subway train. Somehow, I got on it once and it took me awhile to get off and find my way back to Songtan. The express stops a lot fewer times between Seoul and Songtan. I have no idea where you catch the express at.

Riding the Line 1 from Songtan to Seoul and back again is not as difficult as I've tried to explain. You just need to know that you only have one way to get into Seoul. Coming back to Songtan, there are 3 or 4 possibilities and you need to be alert so that you don't go the wrong way. However, if you do get a little lost, get off the train, regroup, and go the other direction.

Almost every subway map that you will find will be very simple. It will only show that the Line 1 divides at Guro and nothing else. It does not show the small detour at Byeongjeom. It does not show the express train that stops at Osan, but not at Songtan. There is also another subway train that runs down the Line 1 tracks and I think it is also an express train that stops in different places than the other express subway. I never got on that one, so I'm not sure how to get on it or where it stops.  To complicate things even more, there is the KTX super fast train that runs along the Seoul subways. I know that you can catch the train in Seoul and go to the far south of South Korea. I plan to take the train down to Busan and eat some seafood and shop next year.
