Drying Plaster Molds

We've had a few days with low humidity. I've been trying to dry my plaster molds out so that I can start handbuilding some bowls. Unfortunately, I make pottery in my garage and outside under a metal roof. The garage does not have a heater or airconditioning. Since I live close to the ocean, things dry out slowly. This is especially true when it rains. I hope that the molds are ready to use in another week or week and a half.

American Style Korean Dinner

This is a fairly typical Korean food dinner that I have been eating lately. I am basically just adding rice and Korean side dishes to whatever type of meat that I am eating that day. It's quick, simple, and healthy. I am fortunate that there is a Korean grocery store in Houston, Texas. I love H Mart. My favorite part of the store is the produce department. It is the best in town. They have a large selection of sides to chose from. I'll usually pick up 3 or 4 different types for the week. That gives me some variety.

This meal consists of a nice piece of salmon along with a bowl of sticky rice. I also have kimchi, radish kimchi, and spicy bean sprouts. I think the spicy bean sprouts are my favorite side. My after dinner snack is a small can of Chilsing cider. It really helps get the hot taste out of your mouth.

My Korean friends would make fun of me if they saw how little food was on my plate. Korean people can really eat a lot.

South Koreans Love Golf

When you ride the train between Songtan and Seoul, you will see dozens of golf driving ranges. They are evident due to the green mesh that covers the range. I was lucky enough to go to the range a few times with some friends. They go to the golf driving range almost every day of the week. At 6:00 in the morning they are at the tee. The place that I went to was extremely nice. I think it had 3 levels or maybe more. Going to the range was more than just hitting a ball. It is a social event. It is where friends have a chance to socialize. While golf is important, I got the feeling that being with friends was even more important.

I have hardly ever hit a golf ball. It only took one swing for everyone to know it. Everyone was really helpful. They loaned me clubs and gave me a lot of advice. At times I was given too much advice and hit the ball poorly. Still, I had so much fun and it was definitely a trip highlight.

When the Koreans were hitting balls, they turned serious. I was much less serious. I'm sure that I irritated them a little when I celebrated that my ball went 100 yards. I am seriously thinking about going to the golf range close to my house. There are hundreds of driving ranges and golf course close to my home. Golf is very popular in Texas. It can be played 12 months out of the year. If I get the chance to go to the golf range next year, it was be fun to surprise everyone.

My Korean Diet Is Failing

I sort of got off of my Korean diet. It is fairly evident since I've gained 6 pounds since I started 2 or 3 weeks ago. I've turned from healthy Korean food to a diet of fast food, fired food, and ice cream. Today, I am starting over. I definitely need to lose 30 pounds in a little less than a year. I am going back to the only way that works for me. I have to write everything that I eat in a daily journal along with the times that I exercise. I need to go to the big Korean grocery store today and stock up. I wiil lose the weight.

Wood Firing Opportunity

I just found out that there is a new wood firing in a couple of months. The firing will take place where the 2011 Maskabal workshop was held in a huge noborigama. There is a little room in the back of the kiln. If there is enough, I may take some of my 2011 vacation in January when the firing will take place. I really love that kiln. It is an absolute beast. It burns massive amounts of wood. So, it takes a lot of people to fire it successfully. There is one small thing that I don't like about it. It is mainly a glaze firing. It doesn't produce the woodfire effects that are evident in most of the work that I post. Still, it is wood firing and I can't stay away. I am a wood firer. It is that simple.

In the picture is my friend from South Korea. I'm sure that the firing will bring up some good memories.

Propane Costs Have Increased

I got a big surprise when I went to fill up my propane tanks. The price of propane has gone up to $4.40 US per gallon. I think that is over an $1 US increase since January. I really don't have a choice but I'll be firing a little faster than normal to save some gas and money.

I have 2 tanks that hold between 22 and 23 gallons. They are called 100 pound tanks. They are the largest size that is legal to haul in a vehicle to the propane dealer. I use 1 tank when I bisque fire. The bisque firing uses about 7 gallons. It depends on the work in the kiln and how fast I want to fire. When I high fire to cone 10, I use both tanks. I fire with 1 tank until I reach about 1000 C. Then, I use the other tank to help get the temperature up to 1300 C easily. I end up using about 17 gallons to high fire with. Again, it depends on how fast I want to fire. I will now be firing faster, while still being cautious.

New Versus Old Bottle Form

Earlier this year I decided to change my bottle form from one with a long neck to a stockier look. I thought it would be a good idea to create more of a masculine form.I added a couple pounds of clay to make it a bit larger. I also changed from my usual white stoneware to a porcelain. Now, I'm changing back to my old form. For some reason, the new bottles just don't appeal to me anymore.

The left bottle is the new form. I prefer the bottle on the right.

I've decided to fire about 40 of the bottle in copper red. I need to get them fired to clear up some shelf room for some handmade pieces and a few more of the other bottle form. I plan on woodfiring them next Summer at Northern Arizona University. For 4 out of the last 5 years I've taken the Summer woodfire workshop. We fire 5 to 10 wood kiln loads in the 2 week class. I take a pickup truck load to class every year. It more than fulfills my yearly wood firing desire. I can't wait. I missed it this year.

First Korean Language Exam

I've finished my first self study Korean language book since my trip to South Korea. I am going to review tomorrow and then take the test in the back of the book on Sunday. If I pass the test, I'll move on to another book, if I don't I guess I'll cry! I also have 176 vocabulary words and small phrases that I am going to test myself on. Once again, I'll either pass or I'll cry. I think I'm learning, but I can't be sure. I really need to find a part time tutor before I start Korean classes again in January.

By the way, this is probably the best self study Korean language book I have seen so far. We'll see if it is helping me retain any Korean. Your experience may be different than mine.

Pottery Paddle Patterns

Just making up the title was worth this post. I'm finished burning in the designs on my new pottery paddles. I still have to carve out the burned areas and them sand them down. I am also thinking of wrapping cord around the handles. We'll see about that.

I wasn't sure how to come up with the designs. I do admit to borrowing one. The others I just made up. I do know that the patterns aren't all that uncommon. Still, they are my paddles which I will use to make my own distinct marks. After I get done making these paddles, I want to make some plaster molds and create some stamps. I'm designing the stamps now. I am mostly going to use flower designs on my pottery.

I also own 2 paddles that I bought years ago. I don't think I ever used them. They both have a rectangular pattern. Almost every paddle that I've ever seen has this pattern. This is why I want to make my own.

Police Cars In South Korea

I only saw a few police cars during my visit to South Korea. It seems like most of the police force is made up of very young men who work on foot. There was one unusual thing that I noticed about the cars. They always had their flashing lights on. In the United States, the police only turn on their lights if it is an emergency or if they are doing a traffic stop. The flashing lights almost always bring a little worry and maybe even a small amount of fear when you see them. I'm not sure why the South Korean police do this. Maybe this is to help the people locate them, let everyone know they are working, or something else. Whatever the reason, it is different than I see on a daily basis in the United States. Like everything that is different between South Korea and America, neither is good or bad, it is only different.

This is the last bottle in the grouping.

International Travel Can Be Difficult

I wasn't fully prepared to visit a foreign country. There are so many cultural differences that it can overwhelm you. There is also a feeling of loneliness that can occur when there are language barriers. I will admit that I wanted to leave after 3 days. I actually got online to check for flights back to the United States. Part of the problem was a severe lack of sleep. However, I felt lost and out of place.

I am so grateful to myself for staying. After a few more days, I not only got used to the cultural differences, I fully accepted them. I did not mind that others were talking and I could not understand what they were saying.

After a week into my trip, I started exploring the country and having fun. If I got lost, I just considered it an adventure. Now that I have been exposed to the cultural differences, I will be much more prepared for my next trip abroad. So, if you are planning to take that first trip overseas, be prepared. Get through that initial cultural shock and enjoy your trip.

You Get What You Pay For

I bought this Korean language cd for $3 US in a used book store. I wish I still had the $3. It features a Korean lady who I absolutely have no idea what she is saying. This is supposed to be for beginners, but the words and phrases are things that you will hardly ever hear, even if you spend a lifetime in Korea. One of my favorites is "thanks a million". I would bet that not a single person in Korea said that today. Another good one was "please ring". I am not sure what that even means. So is you really want to waste some money I would recommend that you buy this cd. If you want to actually learn some Korean look elswhere.

The Kindness Of Strangers

There were too many times that some nameless person saved me while I was in Korea. My first experience with this was at the greeting area at Incheon Airport in Seoul. I was meeting my friend. Unfortunately, I got held up in customs, so I was running over an hour late. When I entered the greeting area at passenger pickup, there were a few hundred people looking for someone. I glanced out into the crowd and couldn't spot my friend. So, I walked. I ended up at the far end of the airport. I then walked to the other end. I was starting to panic. Just as I was about to walk the other way, a nice gentleman came up to me. He asked if there was someone he could call so that they could meet me. He talked to my friend and soon we were together. I really thank that nice man and all of the others that came to my rescue on my trip to South Korea.

Here are a few photos of one of the bottles.

Riding The Seoul Subway During Rush Hour

First, I have my doubts that my Korean friends will know what rush hour is. It is the hour just before work starts and the hour just after work ends. Everyone is in a hurry to either go to work or go home. Generally, the rush hours are 8 to 9 in the morning and 5 to 6 in the afternoon.

One day, I got the idea to ride the subway during the afternoon rush hour. I just wanted to see what it would be like. It turned out to be a great adventure, but I don't plan on doing it again. I took took a few trains before I was close enough to board the next one to stop. After the train stopped, the doors opened to a subway car completely stacked full with people. I wouldn't have gotten on, but the crowd push me and another dozen people into the way over crowded car. It was so crowded that I could only move my neck and head. It was nice to be taller than average. It might have been hard to breathe if you were a little shorter.

I ended up in the very middle of the car. I could not reach anything to hold onto. It turned out that I really didn't need to hold onto anything. We were so tightly packed, that it was impossible to fall down. As a group we swayed front to back, and side to side. It was actually a nice experience. It is something that is hard to describe. While I had a good time on this one trip, I would not like to do it every day.

3 Wood Fired Bottles, Part 1 3

These are some of my favorites wood fired bottles. They were fired last year at Northern Arizona University. The bottles were fired in the double wide train kiln. They were loaded in a prime location, directly under a side stoke hole. We really stuff a lot of wood through the side stoke holes on the big train kiln. Everything under the openings gets a lot of ash.

These bottles are about as good as it gets. Of course, that depends on what you like. Personally, I like rough surfaces, runny ash, and flashed colors. These pots have that and even more. It was nice that the 3 bottles were fired next to each other. The 3 bottles are located at the top of the photo.

I guess the best compliment that a wood firer can get is that the other potters can't keep their hands and eyes off it. When we unload a wood kiln, we have to form a line of people from the kiln to the unloading area. As a really good pot gets passed down the line, everyone handles it for a moment. Those special piece of pottery causes the line to move slow. That is the ultimate compliment to a potter. Here my friend Rena examines one of the bottles as it leaves the kiln.

Korean Language E-book

I have been looking for a new Korean language study book. I found this book online for around $40 US. I thought that sounded a little too expensive. Today I found the same book on a site that offered it as a free download. I printed it out and will be using it another week when I complete my first workbook. I glanced through the book and it looks really good. It does deal with a little more grammar than I would like. It might not be the best book for someone who is new to Korean studies. Still, it's free, so what is there to lose. It takes awhile to print. It is almost 250 pages.

Celadon Bowls That I Bought In South Korea

I bought this pair of bowls at the Icheon Ceramic Festival In South Korea. They have a nice celadon glaze on them. I like celadon glazes but I don't love them. I like blue celadons better than greens. However, since South Korea is known for its beautiful green celadons, I had to buy some celadon pottery. These bowls were inexpensive. They were 10,000 Won each or about $9 US.

The bowls are a good size and shape. I like the design that goes around the rim. There is Korean writing, but it doesn't actually spell anything. Still, it makes a nice border. The potter who made these bowls gave them a little bit of a triangle shape by altering the rim. It's a nice touch. Most Korean pottery is perfect, without any altering at all.

The celadon is nice and glossy. I like celadons like that. It also has some nice crackle in the glaze. I prefer celadons that have a crackle pattern to them.

The foot ring is nice.

Copper Red Firing

I decided that I am going to fire a kiln load or two of copper reds. The copper red glaze is very popular in South Korea. I've always wanted to fire some, but I never did. I am motivated after seeing beautiful they are in person. These are some examples of copper red glazed pots that I saw in South Korea.

I have a bunch of porcelain bottles that I don't want anymore. I like my white stoneware bottles a little better for wood firing. Also, I changed the bottle shape for the porcelain clay and it is a little fat looking for my taste. Also, copper reds look best on porcelain.

The copper glaze runs badly. If you aren't careful, the glaze can run off of the pot and on to the kiln shelf. I made some small trays to catch any glaze that runs. It was nice to dust off my slab roller and use it for something other than a table.

I'm not sure which glaze recipes that I'll use yet. One of my potters friends wants me to try his copper red. I'm sure that I will. I'll probably try to find 2 more recipes out of my glaze book.

Wing Pattern Bottle

It almost looks like the dark patterns on this bottle appear to be wings. Maybe, it's just late and I'm running out of names for the bottles that look very similar. This is another good example of a reduction cooled wood fired bottle. You get some very interesting colors when you keep the kiln in reduction during the cooling cycle. I prefer the blues, the greys, the tans, and the other soft colors to the bright greens that result from an oxidation cooling cycle. This bottle is made from a white stoneware. The colors would be much different if the clay had more iron. I like both looks about the same. I think I'm going to fire a little more red clay this year.

Seoul Subway, Line 1

I stayed in a hotel in Songtan for most of my visit to South Korea. Songtan is on Line 1 of the Seoul subway system. You get on the subway and after an hour to an hour and a half, you are in the center of Seoul. It's that simple. It is about 32 stops from the Insadong area, however.

Now getting back to Songtan from Seoul is much harder. From the Insadong area, you ride the Line 1 to the Guro stop. There, the Line 1 splits. One leg goes towards Songtan and one leg goes toward Incheon. More than once, I got on the wrong subway car and went a few stops toward Incheon before I got off and got on the right car. Unfortunately, I can't tell you how to get on the right subway car. At the Guru stop, you have to look outside at the signs in the subway station and make sure that the next stop is on the way to Songtan. If you go the wrong direction, you just get off the subway and head back to Guro. You might lose 10 to 20 minutes at the most.

Once you get past Guro, it is smooth riding to Byeongjeom. There, the line divides again. One set of tracks goes down one stop and they clean the train there. The train will sit there for 20 to 30 minutes. Then, it heads back to Seoul. You want to be on the train that goes towards Songtan. Again, I can't tell you how to get on the right train. I did notice that if almost everyone got off at Byeongjeom, then you should get off too. Once you get off the subway car, you can make a quick connection to go towards Songtan.

Now, all you have to do is sit back and wait for the Songtan stop. Unless...........you get on the express subway that doesn't stop in Songtan. This is also a line 1 subway train. Somehow, I got on it once and it took me awhile to get off and find my way back to Songtan. The express stops a lot fewer times between Seoul and Songtan. I have no idea where you catch the express at.

Riding the Line 1 from Songtan to Seoul and back again is not as difficult as I've tried to explain. You just need to know that you only have one way to get into Seoul. Coming back to Songtan, there are 3 or 4 possibilities and you need to be alert so that you don't go the wrong way. However, if you do get a little lost, get off the train, regroup, and go the other direction.

Almost every subway map that you will find will be very simple. It will only show that the Line 1 divides at Guro and nothing else. It does not show the small detour at Byeongjeom. It does not show the express train that stops at Osan, but not at Songtan. There is also another subway train that runs down the Line 1 tracks and I think it is also an express train that stops in different places than the other express subway. I never got on that one, so I'm not sure how to get on it or where it stops.  To complicate things even more, there is the KTX super fast train that runs along the Seoul subways. I know that you can catch the train in Seoul and go to the far south of South Korea. I plan to take the train down to Busan and eat some seafood and shop next year.

Green Fingers Bottle

This bottle looks a little like the comet bottle that I recently posted about. They were both in the same firing. The bottles were fired for 5 days in an anagama. They were both loaded on the top shelf that was in the stack close to the firebox. That are gets a lot of good ash. This bottle caught a little more ash and the melted ash formed fingers of glaze that started running down the side of the bottle. If the firing had lasted a few more days, it would have looked really, really good.

Korean Studies 한국학

I am going to learn as much Korean language as possible in the next year. It is really not necessary to enjoy a trip to South Korea, but it will help to learn a little before you go. I have been studying alone for an hour to an hour and a half every night. I'm also been carrying some vocabulary words with me when I go to work. I study them at lunch and at other times during the day. I spend a lot of time driving each day. So, I am looking for a good Korean language cd to play in the car. If I find one, I'll post about it.

I'm halfway through this workbook. I have looked just about every Korean language book that is available at the bookstores. This one works best for me. The way that the material is presented actually sticks in my head. It's at a low beginner level, but it isn't boring. The audio cd is really good and it could be played in the car, but it is really better suited to help complete the assignments in the workbook. The cost was $20 US and well worth it.

The second book that I have been studying in is more of an advanced beginner book. The concepts are still fairly basic, but the emphasis is on sentence structure and grammar. Somehow, this book actually explains Korean grammar in a way that I can understand. No other book that I know of is able to do this. If you are going to be a casual tourist in South Korea, I think your time would be better served learning nouns, verbs, and small phrases. However, if you want to hold short conversations, this book is for you.

I also try to read for an extra 20 to 30 minutes every day. I can read well, but not very fast. I also have a little problem with some of the double vowels. Even though I can read, I usually don't know any of the words that I'm reading. That should change with time. This book is about a famous Korean potter, Kim Yong Moon. I like the book, but the print is so small that my eyes start watering after 5 minutes and I have to stop and rest. You can also read off of the internet easily. I'm hoping that my 10,000 Won bookmark will help me remember more.

This is going to be my Korean study for the next 9 weeks or so. I'd like to add a tutor, but I haven't been able to find one. Around the third week of January the school that I take Korean languages classes opens up again.
