My first wood firing experience was in 2006. I had been working with clay for 6 months. I probably spent 2 hours a week making pots. This small pot is one those first few pots. I used a red clay that was high in iron.

I thought a lot about what type of pots I should make for my first wood firing. I thought that it would be a good idea to make grooves into my pots. The idea was to catch the wood ash and make some nice drippy glaze runs. I now prefer the prefer smooth pots, but I am beginning to be interested in deep textures again.

This pot was fired in a train kiln. We fired the train for 3 days with pine and used a little hardwood to side stoke. The pine wood came from a log home factory and had a high percentage of bark. I think that contributed to the beautiful colors that the kiln produced.
