There can a lot of difference in how glazes look when they are in a soda kiln or in a wood soda kiln. Not every glaze will show a lot of change but some can change dramatically. One thing that is significant is the wood ash. The ash changes the chemical composition of the glaze. It tends to bleach a lot of glazes. This will cause them to be much lighter in color.

This is example is a glaze called Reitz Blue Green. It tends to be mostly green but turns a little blue when it is hit with soda. I love this glaze, but I hardly ever glaze any wood fired pots. The bowl on the right was glazed with Reitz Blue Green. I threw about 100 of these bowls for a friend during one of the workshops since she didn't have many pots. She gave me these two. The pot on the left has some celadon glaze on it. The bowls were first glazed with a shino to give them the orange color.

They were fired in the double catenary arch wood fired kiln. The right side of the kiln is wood fired and we add soda to it towards the end of the firing. The left chamber is wood only.

One year we all had a bunch of left over pots. So, we decided to fire the gas soda kiln a couple of times. I had never put any pots into a soda kiln. I loved the Reitz Blue Green, so I glazed all of my bottles with the glaze. They did not look anything like the bowls that came out of the wood soda. I didn't like them, but everyone else did. So, I gave them to all of my new friends that attended the workshop. They were all happy to receive. That made me feel good.
