The 2012 festival will be held from September 28 to October 7. I will be in South Korea then. My goal this year (2012) is to attend as many cultural events as I can, while still allowing free time to shop and explore. However, I do realize that as soon as I arrive in South Korea my plans will be changing by the hour.
To get to Andong you need to take a bus from the East Seoul Bus Terminal which is know as Dongbu Station. The terminal is located on Line 3 at the Express Bus Terminal Station. The bus from Seoul to Andong takes about 3 hours. You can also get to Andong by taking the Jungang train line to Andong. I don't have any information about that. I will probably take the bus from Suwon to Andong. That will cut a substantial amount of time off my trip. To get to Andong from where I will be staying, Songtan will take about 4 1/2 hours. I really don't want to spend a combined travel time of 9 hours in one day travelling to a festival.
Once in Andong, there are 2 locations for the mask dance performances. One of the places is a short 10 minute walk from the bus station. The other is in Hahoe Village, about a 40 to 50 minute bus ride from Andong. The bus to take is Bus 46. There are a few places to stay in Andong, but spaces are limited. It might be best to go during the week if possible. I don't know, the sense of adventure in travelling to a remote area of South Korea intrigues me. It might be fun to see a lot of the South Korean country side. Also, seeing a performance that not too many people from America get to experience would be a highlight.
