In 2009, I produced one of my favorite pots. It was fired in the Northern Arizona University double wide train kiln. The kiln was fired normally. However, we used reduction cooling to produce some nice coloration. I am a big fan of reduction cooling. I have been experimenting with it in the gas kiln. To increase the effects of the reduction cooling, we sometimes spray potassium carbonate on the wood before we stoke it.

This is me after a big stoke. Who knew that fire was hot? I have learned a lot about protecting my skin since this firing.

We did one thing that I have never done before, we stoked straw onto some of the pots. The straw contains a high level of silica and is very refractory. It leaves a nice textured surface. Rice hulls are the preferred material for this, but plain straw will work also.

Towards the end of the firing, after  cone 10 drops, a handful of straw is stoked on every other sidestoke. The pots directly under the sidestoke hole get the unique texture. Jason Hess shows how it is done in the photo above.

Here is a closeup view of the effects that the straw have gives after the combustibles have burned away. You really should see them in person. They are fantastic. I do not know why I do not own one. I will change that next year. Most of the white straw ash will brush away and leave the silica that is embedded in the ash glaze from the kiln.

Here are several of the bottles that Jason Hess makes. The surfaces are very complex. They are fired over and over and over until they are just right. The close bottles were under the sidestoke hole that the straw was introduced into. The other bottles were in the middle of the kiln.

My bottle was next to the bottles that had a lot of straw stoked onto them. I will write a post about it tomorrow.
