Underfired Porcelain Bottles 해고 도자기 병에서

Earlier this year, in February, I got to fire a fairly new anagama. This was a firing that was arranged by the school where I was taking some pottery lessons. The kiln was owned by Shane Tidmore. I really liked the kiln, but the quality of wood that we used was of really poor quality. It was old and rotten. We didn't fire long enough or get the kiln hot enough. I think this was only the second or third firing. They are still learning the best way to fire this kiln. I am positive the next firing is going to be fantastic. I hope to get invited.

Here are 3 of the 6 bottles that I placed in the kiln. They were made out of a new porcelain that I was testing. Unfortunately, I still don't know exactly how the clay is going to fire. The results do point to the clay being a good wood fire clay. The clay is Laguna's Nara Porcelain. It throws like a dream. It throws as well as my usual clay, Laguna's B-mix. The middle bottle is pretty nice. The clay matures early and ash will run and form nice drips. It looks like it is going to flash well.

Here is the back side of the bottles. There is some flashing, but it tends to more brown than I would like. The surfaces are dry and I think it will be more orange or pink when it gets fired hotter. I will refire these bottles in another woodfiring.

This is the kiln that we fired. I really like this kiln. If we had some better wood, especially for the finish, we would have had better results. A cord or two of cedar would have helped with the top temperature. I would also add some potassium carbonate to the pine we were firing with. This would give us some better reduction colors. The kiln is reasonably close to my house. So, I hope that I can get on the short list to attend some more firings.

Here is what the front of the kiln looked like. There wasn't a lot of color. There wasn't a lot of ash. Even the red clay pots were bland. Still, we had a lot of fun and learned more about the kiln. The next firing will be better.

There was an accident that happened after the firing. Everyone went home while the kiln was cooling. Somehow the rail road timbers that butress the kiln foundation caught on fire. The fire department was called by a neighbor. Fortunately, they responded quickly and the fire did minimal damage. It will have to be rebuilt before the next firing. Also, the chimney was starting to seperate from the chamber. It will be a good time to repair that as well.
