When we perform a reduction cooled firing, we must seal the kiln up as tight as possible. Any leaks will cause the atmosphere to return to an oxygen rich environment and make the reduction colors disappear. One of the things that we must do is seal up all cracks. We do this by putting clay or wadding in the cracks. It is not always easy to do. The kiln is really hot. As the wadding is applied, the water turns to steam and it is hard to get the wadding to stick.

Here is the double wide train kiln just before we closed the chimney damper. You can see plenty of cracks that need to be closed. Small pieces of bricks or kiln shelves will be added to close up the largest holes. Wadding or clay will fill in the rest.

As the chimney is closed, there is back pressure and flames shoot out every open crack in the kiln. This makes closing the cracks even more difficult.

After trying ther traditional way of pushing the wadding into the cracks with heavy gloves, the ladies came up with a new strategy. This is one that I hadn't thought of, but it worked. I might even use myself in the future. Their basic plan was the make balls of wadding and just throw it at the cracks. It worked. This was one of the best reduction cooled firings that I have been involved in. The kiln was sealed really tight.

Here is the kiln after we unloaded. Maybe the kiln should have been lifted off its base and reassembled in an art gallery as an installation piece! I don't know about that, since this is my favorite kiln. However, I congratulate the ladies on a job well done.
