Ryan Mitchell, Potter and Sculptor 라이언 미첼 포터와 조각

When I attended the Archie bray workshop in 2006, there was a young college student who helped with the loadings and firings. His name was Ryan Mitchell. Ryan already had extensive experience with woodfiring. I am grateful for his insights into the process. From what I have seen, Ryan primarily makes sculptures. He usually works on a large scale. Most of his work has an architectural look to them.

In the 5 years since I met Ryan, his work has progressed to a very high level. He has spent most of that time studying in various countries around the world, gaining further knowledge and skills. I personally think of Ryan as one of the top potters around.

Here, Ryan and Tara Wilson explore one of his sculptures, fresh out of the kiln. At this time, he worked with mainly slabs, extrusions, and various slips. It was simple but dramatic. I guess this form would be referred to as a table.

This is another view that gives a little more detail. Most of the pieces that he brought to the workshop, had this particular type of structure.

Here is another simple piece. One thing that was the focal point of the piece was that it was tied at the top with 1/4 inch extrusions made of porcelain. Porcelain is the material that Ryan often uses to give contrast to the sculptures. Somehow, Ryan was able to tie this small bundle of extrusions into a knot. You could not see any areas that the extrusions were handled. Also, the extrusions did not crack during the firing, even though they should have. That is amazing.

Now, here is my favorite piece from the workshop. This is a large basket form. It was probably close to 30 inches tall. The basket was composed of only slabs. Not only was the sculpture well constructed, but the kiln was kind and the surface was perfect.

I would recommend researching more of Ryan's pottery. He was recently featured in one of Australia's premier pottery magazines. I think Ryan is well on his way to becoming one of the best potters that America has to offer. It was a pleasure to have met and fire with him.
