Tale Of Two Bowls 두 그릇 이야기

Two of the bowls that I fired in the Archie Bray anagama were literally blasted by the ash. They were fired on an angle and the ash partially filled the bottom of the bowls. The ash melted and it appears to be 1/2 inch thick. The marks made by the ash are impressive.

The bowls were fired near each other and look virtually identical. The inside was glazed with Shino. I have no idea which Shino. This is the position that they were fired in.

I turned the bowls upside down to show the ash pattern a little better. The solid chunk inside the bowl on the left is from the roof. This is pretty common in pots on the top shelf. The older the kiln, the more common it is.

Here is a picture of the Archie Bray anagama. It doesn't look very impressive. However, it produces some amazing surfaces. I would love to fire it again....and again....and again!

The bowls were placed on the top shelf in the center of the kiln. The top shelf of the front stack is very underated for getting ashy pots. It is one of my favorite spots. The ashes rise with the flames, straight from the firebox. As the flame slows due the front stack acting as a bagwall, the ash starts falling down. There are always some sweet pots there. The bowls are just in front of the big pot in the center. The big pot was one of Josh Deweese's. He uses slips and Mason stains to get some really distinctive pots. The Mason stains that he uses can take cone 10 to 12. Tara Wlison along with the other women from the workshop strike a pose. The ladies can fire.

Here is a closeup of the bowls. They were turned to the side. This caused a little eddy and more ash landed in the bowls than if they were faced towards the front. I can thank Ryan Mitchell for the loading. Thanks, Ryan!!!
