Woodfiring does not produce consistent results. You can't see a woodfired pot in a book, fire the kiln, and expect your pot to look like the picture. It doesn't happen that way. I don't glaze any of my pots that go into the wood kilns. That should lead to some sort of consistent results, but it doesn't. Even pots that are next to each other can be amazingly different. I have learned to accept this. I have actually learned to love the various, inconsistent looks that woodfiring gives. Sometimes, the results are not acceptable and the pot will need to be refired. This only serves to make the pots even more unique. I know some potters that have fired pieces over a dozen times. Those pieces are absolutely amazing.

I am a high risk, high reward woodfirer. I love my pieces to be near the firebox or under a sidestoke hole. Some of the pots will be broken due to errant stokes of wood. I don't mind losing a few pots, because the pots that survive can be spectacular.

This is a group of bottles that was placed under several sidestoke holes in an anagama. The firing was a little difficult to to the wood being wet and other factors. The kiln had a hard time reaching temperature. I think that this is the reason the the kiln was sidestoked too early. Normally, the sidestoking begins when the front has reached temperature. The sidestoking serves two purposes. It heats up the back of the kiln and it slows the front of the kiln. The combustion of the wood in the sidestoke holes actually acts as a damper.

I don't think that any of these bottles reached much above bisque temperature. The pots were buried under the coal bed too early. The coal bed actually insulated the pots from the heat. It does seem odd that pots buried under burning wood wood be prevented from getting any hotter. The reason for this is oxygen. No oxygen can reach the bottom of the coal bed. This prevents combustion. If there is no combustion, there is no release of heat. Therefore, the temperature doesn't rise like it does on the surface of the coal bed. That is why it is important to sidestoke at the correct time in the firing.

I destroyed all of these pots. Most of them were too badly cracked. You might notice some really unusual colors on the pots. There is a fair amount of purple and green. The pots were bare clay. We only stoked wood into this kiln. I have no idea where this color came from.

I saved two pots from the group that I want to refire. They both have a large accumulation of ash deposits on them. They will look really great after another firing. The first one is mostly black. It exhibits a lot of carbon trapping. It had one big wadding in the center. It would actually be a nice pot even if it was not refired. Still, I am going for a different look than this.

The back has a lot of unmelted wood ash on the back of the pot. After it is fired hot enough, it will have some really good ash drips and some good bidoros.

The back of the bottle has a really thick layer of unmelted ash. When this ash buildup is melted in the next firing it should make a really nice pot.
