This was a horrible accident, if you were a pot. We place some pots in the base of the chimney of the double catenary arch kiln. On one firing, the kiln shelf damper broke and fell about 10 to 12 feet down onto the pots. It was a total loss for the pots that were involved.

Due to massively overfiring the small train kiln, every pot in the front of the kiln stuck to either a shelf or another pot. One of the nicest pots that I've seen was destroyed when they tried to seperate it from the fused stack. It was made by Heidi who I have fired with a couple of times.

Bowls seem to break fairly often due to being thin. There are generally a few out of every kiln that don't make it. Also, some of the potters destroy every pot that don't quite make their standards. I do not personally feel this way. You can always refire it a time or two to give it the look that you want.

Sometimes we just need to let pots take their natural course during a firing. He placed the pot at the front of the firebox, near the wall. He started throwing wood near the pot early in the firing. He was wanting a nice crusty pot. Some time during the firing a piece of wood hit it and it was broken. This is actually not a good area to get a crusty pot. The most likely outcome would have been that the pot would have been buried under the ember bed early in the firing. This would have prevented the pot from reaching full temperature. This is due to the insulating properties of the coal bed. The pot would have been weak, almost like bisqueware.
