Kiln Accidents, Part 2 킬 사고, 2 부

I decided to include a few more photos of some kiln accidents. Accidents do occur a little more often in woodfiring than regular gas firings. Accidents are fairly rare, but they do occur. Careful loading and placement of the pots help minimize any mishaps.

It is never good when an arm load of shattered pots comes out of the kiln. I'm not sure what happened to create this pile of shattered pottery. I'm sure several people were disappointed. The good thing about woodfiring is that you may have dozens of pots in each kiln. Losing one or two should be no big deal.

Steve unloads some stuck pots from a difficult firing. The kiln was greatly over fired and over stoked. The crew pushed the firing to the limit and we all paid the price. Still, I would fire it the same way if I had the chance. However, I would load the kiln in preparation for more ash.

Another one of Rena's pots got stuck to a paper clay sculpture. Rena's pot was amazing. It was one of the best pot in the kiln. However, she likes perfection and destroyed the piece due to the scar from being stuck to the sculpture. On a side note, I was impressed with the paper clays ability to stand up to the high heat. It also flashed really well.

One of the potters in the summer workshop had two beautiful teapots in the firings and very little else. She was taking classes so she could graduate from college a few weeks after the workshop. Both of her teapots were hopelessly stuck to objects and were destroyed. It was really sad.

This is a tiny pile of the broken pottery that came out of the noborigama that we fired at the 2011 Mascabal Workshop. A stack of kiln shelves fell during the firing. I arrived at the kiln opening after all of the pots were out of the kiln. I heard it was really, really bad. Most of the pots in this section of the kiln were made by the Korean potters. Everyone was greatly disappointed that their pots were destroyed. The pots in the photo were made by some of the local college potters. The Korean pots had already been discarded before I got there.
