Accidents happen when you are making pottery. They are common when you wood fire your pots. I find it best not to get too attached to any one piece of work. It would be very hard for me to put an enormous effort into one piece, knowing that all could be lost during a brief moment. Fortunately, such incidents are rare.

A famous Korean potter came to the Archie Bray and demonstrated how to make an Onggi pot. Unfortunately, I do not know the potters name. He made a huge pot during the time he was there. The potters at the Archie Bray had been looking for an opportunity to fire the big jar. During the woodfire workshop, they decided to place it in the anagama. I think that this is the only kiln that it would fit in.

Before I go any farther, I need to say that the pot was greenware. It had not been bisqued. The pot was transported to the kiln without any problems.

Next, the big pot was place at the mouth of the anagama. A long strip of cloth was wrapped around the bottom of the pot. We would use this to lift the pot into the kiln. I think 4 or 5 of us lifted the pot and walked it carefully towards the kiln shelf, which was covered with crushed oyster shells.

Somehow the Onggi pot and the corner of the kiln shelf had a very minor collision. In the blink of an eye, the pot came apart. Everyone was shocked and saddened. The pot was lost. Personally, I would have fired some of the larger sections and displayed them. Perhaps they would have made interesting wall pieces or large plates. I guess they were discarded since that was not the intent of the artist.

There was a huge Onggi jar on the grounds at the Archie Bray. It was made by another famous Korean potter. Again, I do not know his name. It is a spectacular piece of pottery. It is a testiment to the skill of that potter and all who participate in the Onggi style of pottery.
