3 Firebox Bottles, Part 1 3 파이어 병, 1 부

These bottles show the effects of being placed close to the firebox. The side of the bottles that faced the firebox got covered by a thick layer of ash. Long streamers of melted ash ran down the sides of the pots to the underside. There, they formed large bidoros. The back side is not quite as impressive. However, it is still awesome. The ash glaze is a little green for my taste. Green is an usual oxidation color. If you have read many of my blog posts you know that I primarily like reduction cooled colors. The ash glaze on these bottles is thick. There is no less than an 1/8 of an inch coating of ash. In some areas it is considerably thicker than that.

I have thought about refiring them with the back side facing the firebox. However, I really like their look and do not want to take any chances of one breaking. Still, I can imagine what they would look like if everything went well.

The bottles were fired in my favorite kiln, the double wide train kiln at Northern Arizona University. The kiln is usually fired for 3 days and allowed to cool for 3 days. I don't think that there would be any advantage to firing it any longer. Most likely there would be so much heat and thick ash glaze that a lot of the pots would be damaged.

This kiln fires like a dream. It does gain temperature very easily. So, you have to stay in control to avoid letting the temperature rise too fast. The only drawback to this kiln would be that you really get a blast of heat during stoking. It is one of the hottest kilns that I have fired.

Here is where the bottles were located in the kiln. I have a better photo, but I can't locate it. I'll post it later if I come across it. I was very fortunate that the bottles were not knocked off their waddings or hit with a large piece of wood. I don't mind getting lucky once in awhile.

I like the fact that I had three bottles that were placed near each other in the perfect spot. I prefer to display my bottles in groups of three. I love to put bottles together that are similar. To me it is not the similarities that are interesting but it their subtle differences that really tell the story. To me the bottles are like people. Their particular surfaces tell the life story of that bottle (person).
