At Northern Arizona University we used the water reduction in the small train kiln. First, we fired the kiln as we normally do. Then, after the entire kiln had reached cone 10 or above, we started the hydrogen reduction. The firebox needs to be burned down fairly low before you start.
We mounted a 55 gallon drum above the kiln. We had a manifold that had some long copper tubing that we placed into the kiln. We angled the tubing towards the walls of the firebox. You don't want to spray directly on any pots. The water was allowed to drip down the inside of the firebox walls. You need to keep the volume low. When water turns to steam, its volume increases 1500%. It would be possible for someone standing near the kiln to get a steam burn. When you are adding the water, do not check the cones!

Here you can see the copper tubing entering the firebox on the train kiln. We has a small valve to regulate the flow of water. When you add the water, it keeps the kiln from going into oxidation while the water is being added. This will change the color of the pots. You will get softer colors. Also, the steam moves the ash glaze on the pots. Think of placing a drop of paint on a table and blowing it with a straw. Also, you will get nice orange peel effects on the pots.

While the water is being introduced to the kiln, keep stoking the kiln lightly. Unfortunately, I do not remember how much water was added during the reduction. I think it was 25 or 30 gallons. I was firing another kiln when the water was being sprayed into the kiln. WARNING: Once again, water reduction is dangerous. Do not attempt it unless you are experienced and it is done in a controlled manner. Do not spray water with a water hose into a kiln. Do not throw water balloons into a kiln. You could be seriously hurt. Do not take this warning lightly.
