60 Second Bowls 60 번째 보울스

In 2009 I made about 100 bowls at the Northern Arizona University Summer woodfire workshop. Almost all of these were for my friend Stevie to fire. They were made really quickly. I threw the bowls in 30 seconds and trimmed them in 30 seconds. They actually looked better than they should have. Still, I wish that I would have taken a little more time, especially on trimming the foot.

The bowls were made out of a handmade clay called Ese Kinose. It is a clay that is made up of a high percentage of Helmar Kaolin. I wish that I could remember the story behind the clay body. I seem to remember that it was used by a visiting artist.

The bowls were fired in at least 4 different wood kilns and there wasn't a lot of differences in the way they looked. There are difference in how close to the flame the piece is, how slow it cooled, and how hot it got. None of the bowls that I fired had any glaze or slips on them.

The clay can turn the most beautiful red of any clay or slip that I have ever seen. This includes books, the internet, or even my imagination. The clay turns a golden color when it is hit by direct flame. Also, when the clay cools slowly, it likes to form iron crystals. These can take over the entire surface. The clay can be very dry if it is not fired hot enough.

Stevie glazed all of her pieces. She is from the Jackson Pollack school of glazing. Drips, drops, and swirls are her specialty. I am starting to warm up to the look. I am not ready to try it myself, but I like it. It is similar to the pots that the Korean potters glazed at the 2011 Mascabal woodfire workshop.
