A long time ago a young man all alone in a small village. One day while working in his garden he said to himself, "Every day I hoe these fields and harvest my crops. I only wish that I had someone to share my meals with." "Share your meals with me" he heard. It was a woman's voice. The man was suprised. He looked all around and could see no one. He went back to working in his garden. "Every day, I hoe these fields, but I have no one to share my meals with. I am tired of eating alone," he said. The man kept on talking to himself and again he heard the woman's voice.
"Share your meals with me," the voice said. This time the man noticed that the voice came from somewhere close by. The man looked at the hedge that separated the fields. All that he saw was a small snail. He couldn't find the source of the voice. Without thinking too much, the young man picked up the snail and put it in a big clay jar.
When the man woke up the next morning, there was a delicious breakfast waiting for him. "Who could have made such a wonderful meal?" he asked with his eyes wide open in amazement. When he got home that evening there was another meal on the table for the young man. "This tastes really good. Tomorrow I'll have to hide and see who is secretly making these nice meals for me," the young man thought to himself.
The next day, the young man pretended he was going to the garden to work. Instead, he walked loudly into the yard and then quietly tiptoed back and hid in the kitchen. Peeking into the kitchen, he saw something that he couldn't believe. A beautiful woman stepped out of the same jar that he had placed the snail in. She cleaned the house, washed his clothes, and even mended some of his old clothing. When evening came, she prepared his dinner. The, she turned into a snail and slowly crawled back into the jar. As the man stared in amazement, he thought to himself. "How I wish that beautiful woman could be my wife!" The next morning the man woke up early and sat by the jar. Before too long, the snail lady crawled out of the jar. The man grabbed her hands tightly and said, "Will you please be my wife?" The lady blushed. Then, she nodded yes. The young man and the beautiful woman lived happily together as husband and wife for many years.
