A long time ago, there lived a good hearted man and his wife in a high mountain village. They were mostly happy, but sometimes were sad since they had no children. Even though they loved one another, they felt a little lonely and empty. Every day the old man went to the forest to cut firewood to sell in the village market. Cutting wood was difficult for someone of his age. One day, the old man went into the woods to cut wood, as usual. However, on this day, the man heard the beautiful song of a bird. "That must be the loveliest song that I have ever heard" said the man. Just for a moment, the old man rested and listened to the bird's song. "Tweet, tweet, tweet," sang the bird.
The song was so beautiful that the old man decided to see the bird that was making this beautiful music. The old man put his axe down and went over the hill, following the sound as he went. Soon, he became upon a strange white bird that was sitting on the limb of an oak tree. The old man had never seen a bird like it. He was very tired now. So he sat down to relax to the song being sung by the strange bird. But, it flew to a tree a ways off and began singing a new song. The old man still wanted to hear more, so he walked up to the new tree. The bird flew away again, just as he was sitting down. The old man kept following the bird and before he realized it, the morning had become evening. The old man suddenly looked around him. "What have I done?" he cried. "Why have I gone so far?" "Where am I?"
Almost as if it had heard what the man said, the bird flew over to where the old man stood. It circled the old man's head a few times before landing at a nearby spring. The old man was very thirsty from walking so deep into the woods. He bent down and took a drink. "This is very refreshing!" he said to himself. "It's as sweet as honey!" Suddenly, he became light headed . "Why do I feel so light headed?" The old man lay down on a flat rock and fell fast asleep.
The day grew dark but the old man did not return home. His wife became very worried. Surely he hasn't run into a wild animal, she tried to assure herself. When it became too late to put off her fears any longer, she went in search of the old man. However, the old man was still sleeping on the rock. He didn't wake up until the middle of the night. "What am I doing here?" he said to himself. He quickly left the forest and headed for his home.
After looking everywhere for her husband, the woman went to the house next door. "My husband is lost in the mountains," she said."I'm afraid something has happened to him" "Can you help me find him?" But the man who lived in the house was known to everyone as a selfish person. "Look here!" he said. "It's the middle of the night. It's no time to go looking for someone. I'm not going anywhere!" The old woman had no choice but to set out on the treacherous path alone.
She had not gone far when here husband came running up to her. They hugged each other until they cried. Then, they walked back home, arm in arm. Inside their home, the old woman lit a lamp. Hearing this, he put his hands to his face. It was just as his wife had said. He was no longer an old man, he was now young again! He sat down to think. "How can this be?" he wondered. After awhile, he slapped his knee. "It must be the spring water I drank" The old woman was puzzled and demanded that her husband tell exactly what had happened. When he finished, she began to cry. "It's a wonderful thing that has happened to you. But everyone will find it strange that you are married to such an old wife" The old man just laughed. "Do not worry. Come back to the fountain with me. You can become young again too. Then we can be young together. Nobody will say that you are married to a man that is too young."
As soon as it was light enough, the couple went to the spring. The wife drank a few sips and then fell fast asleep. When she woke up, her young husband was sitting by her side.
