Fifth Day of Intermediate Korean Class 중급 한국어 클래스의 다섯 번째 날

I have been studying Korean for about 10 months now. The many hours of doing homework are starting to pay off in my Korean studies. I seem to be retaining more knowledge than I ever had. I don't need to look every single word up. While I'm gaining confidence, I know that I have a long way to go.

This week we worked on the names of family members. Not only does Korean have 2 number systems, but some siblings are called by more than one name. A daughter will be called yeodongsaeng by her older brothers and sisters. She will be called nuna by her younger brothers and eonni by her younger sisters. If you are the youngest brother you will be called namdongsaeng by your older siblings. You will be called hyeong by your younger brothers and oppa by your younger sisters. No one in the family is called by their given name.

We also studied the formality of speaking to those who you need to show respect to. You need to speak in a slightly different way when you talk to your younger sister instead of your grandfather. This is the same as we do in English, only different.

We also spent a lot of class time learning about the names of locations like banks, stores, and places like that. I knew a few of them from my trip to South Korea last year. We also spent 20 minutes of class eating things containing sugar. We seem to do that every class. I'm fairly sure that kids in South Korea don't take a 20 minute cookie and cake break.
