Once I learned to make some simple pottery forms, I started altering them. I would stretch the clay, push it, whatever I could think of. This is one of the first vases that I was happy with the altering process.

This vase was fired in a train kiln. The vase was placed close to the firebox and picked up a lot of natural wood ash glaze. I think this shape looks good wood fired. I think it would work better if it was buried under the bed of coals for a few days.

One year, I made a lot of large vases. I always called them urns, but that's probably not the right term. I find them fun to make and I like their classic look. This is a shape that has been around since the beginning of pottery. I made the vases in a simple shape. I think if I threw some today, I would add a lid and some handles on the side.

I wood fired several of these vases at Northern Arizona University. The vases are a good form for wood firing. They catch a lot of ash and are basically a large painter's canvas for the flames to paint with ash. This particular vase has some deep purple and red flash. It also has some beautiful gold specs that fell on the finger grooves that are created during throwing. I did glaze the inside of the vase with shino.

My original plan was to use these as planters to hold flowers. However, the base of the pot is very narrow. I am worried that they may fall over and break. I do like the curve that the narrow base and wide body form. However, it may be more for looks than for function.

I had my weekly Korean tutoring session last night. We went over my Korean class homework from last week. She also got me started on the homework that my Korean language teacher will give me tonight. I am actually getting decent with word conjugation, sentence structure and other technical parts of the language. However, I am having such a hard time remembering my vocabulary words. It seems to me that I have this backwards. To communicate as a tourist in South Korea, simple words and phrases are all that is needed.

So, I asked my tutor what would be the best way to maximize my time. She thought it was important to finish the homework from my 2 Korean school's classes. She thought that I needed to go slower and try to remember the words that the homework uses instead of just trying to complete the assignments as fast as possible. She also stressed that I need to watch at least 30 minutes of Korean dramas every day that have English subtitles.I admit that I do not have an ear for Korean words. I find it almost impossible to pick out individually words. To me, it seems like every sentence is one long word. I have to improve on that. It's hard to respond to a simple question if you don't know what the question is.

I have about 7 months before I am in lovely South Korea again. I have plans to walk some scenic some trails and hike some of South Korea's mountains. I have to get in better shape. My legs hurt so bad last year from just walking around Seoul and climbing the stairs that are everywhere. It was 7 to 10 days before I could walk without pain. I'm not going to let that happen this year.

Hiking is South Korea appears to be really popular with everyone. I would prefer not to get passed by every 4 year old and every 80 year old on the trail. Plus, I want to have fun. Pain is not fun. One of the hikes that I want to do has 808 stair steps toward the end of the hike. Some of the stairs are really steep. They almost look like ladders.

I go to a regular gym. They have a lot of cardio machines. So, anything that has an incline will be my friend. Now that I think about it, friend is not the right word.

The song was so beautiful that the old man decided to see the bird that was making this beautiful music. The old man put his axe down and went over the hill, following the sound as he went. Soon, he became upon a strange white bird that was sitting on the limb of an oak tree. The old man had never seen a bird like it. He was very tired now. So he sat down to relax to the song being sung by the strange bird. But, it flew to a tree a ways off and began singing a new song. The old man still wanted to hear more, so he walked up to the new tree. The bird flew away again, just as he was sitting down. The old man kept following the bird and before he realized it, the morning had become evening. The old man suddenly looked around him. "What have I done?" he cried. "Why have I gone so far?" "Where am I?"

Almost as if it had heard what the man said, the bird flew over to where the old man stood. It circled the old man's head a few times before landing at a nearby spring. The old man was very thirsty from walking so deep into the woods. He bent down and took a drink. "This is very refreshing!" he said to himself. "It's as sweet as honey!" Suddenly, he became light headed . "Why do I feel so light headed?" The old man lay down on a flat rock and fell fast asleep.

The day grew dark but the old man did not return home. His wife became very worried. Surely he hasn't run into a wild animal, she tried to assure herself. When it became too late to put off her fears any longer, she went in search of the old man. However, the old man was still sleeping on the rock. He didn't wake up until the middle of the night. "What am I doing here?" he said to himself. He quickly left the forest and headed for his home.

After looking everywhere for her husband, the woman went to the house next door. "My husband is lost in the mountains," she said."I'm afraid something has happened to him" "Can you help me find him?" But the man who lived in the house was known to everyone as a selfish person. "Look here!" he said. "It's the middle of the night. It's no time to go looking for someone. I'm not going anywhere!" The old woman had no choice but to set out on the treacherous path alone.

Hearing this, he put his hands to his face. It was just as his wife had said. He was no longer an old man, he was now young again! He sat down to think. "How can this be?" he wondered. After awhile, he slapped his knee. "It must be the spring water I drank" The old woman was puzzled and demanded that her husband tell exactly what had happened. When he finished, she began to cry. "It's a wonderful thing that has happened to you. But everyone will find it strange that you are married to such an old wife" The old man just laughed. "Do not worry. Come back to the fountain with me. You can become young again too. Then we can be young together. Nobody will say that you are married to a man that is too young."

As soon as it was light enough, the couple went to the spring. The wife drank a few sips and then fell fast asleep. When she woke up, her young husband was sitting by her side. She was a pretty young woman again. Now that they were young again, the couple lived together even more happily than before. But there mean neighbor became very jealous. "I want to lose my wrinkles and white hair too! I want to be young again and live a long life!" he grumbled. He couldn't take it any longer and ran to the couple's house. "You must tell me. Today, I got all of my South Korea and Seoul travel books together. I am starting to compile a list of the places that I need to visit this year. I don't trust everything in these books. Plus, I know that a lot of it is out of date. However, the books will give me an idea of the events and places that I want to visit. I can do more research on the internet when I find some places that interest me.

I'm not very interested in places to eat or hotels to stay in. There are plenty of hotels rooms in almost every town in South Korea. My standards aren't too high. So, I'll stay in love motels when they are available. I don't think I could stay at a hostel though. I need some privacy. Good food is available everywhere in South Korea. Every bite of food that I ate in South Korea was delicious. I have no doubt that it will be the same this year.

My plan is to stay out of Seoul during the week. I think I'll try hiking some national parks and visiting some festivals during the first week. I plan on visiting Jeju Island during the second week. I'll probably go to Seoul on the weekends. Of course, this will change often while I plan my trip.

This book is becoming my favorite for learning Korean vocabulary. It is is available at my local book store. So, it must be available in a lot of areas. The book was only $22, which is inexpensive for any foreign language book. The book groups the vocabulary into some good sets. You can pick and choose which words that you want to learn. Personally, I don't think I'll be using the words ostrich or elephant very often, when I am South Korea later this year so I think I'll skip them.

For each of the vocabulary is a cartoon picture. I am a visual learner and the pictures really help me remember the words more easily. The book includes mostly nouns, but there are plenty of verbs and adjectives in the book.

South Korea 2012 Trip Planning 한국 2012 여행 계획

I am starting a folder on the things that I want to do and the places that I want to go this year in South Korea. Last year, I mostly spent time with a couple of friends. I spent a lot of time in Seoul. This year is going to be a lot different. I have plans to visit some cultural festivals. Also, I want to hike some of the national parks, like Seoraksan National Park. Another place that I want to go is Jeju Island. I don't have any idea how to visit some of these places. Therefore, I have to start planning now.

I joined one of the online Korean language groups for a short time last year. Korean Class 101 had a special deal. For $1 US, you could join the group and use their Korean study materials. You had to cancel before the 7 days or you would be charged, what I thought, was an expensive monthly fee. I copied some of the Korean language information before I cancelled my membership. This was just a tiny fraction of all of the material that is available.

I had forgotten that I had this material. I found it today when I was looking for a notebook. I plan to start using it tonight to supplement my Korean studies. I am trying to study Korean every day. Sometimes, I think I'm progressing well. Other times, I feel like it's hopeless to try any more. I'm sure that the reality is somewhere between those two extremes.

This is the pottery book that I read at the most. It is one of my favorite books of all time. For one thing, it brings back many wood firing memories of friends that I made and kilns that I've fired. It's only 4 1/2 months until I go to my annual 2 week wood firing workshop. I hope time goes fast.

A long time ago, there lived a kind and gentle maiden in a remote village. She was poor and was barely able to feed herself and her mother, who she cared for all alone. One day the maiden was in the kitchen, scooping up some rice in a large bowl for dinner. Suddenly, a toad appeared in the kitchen. It crawled over the floor to the maiden, shivering. Then, it jumped onto the kitchen hearth. On the hearth were a few grains of rice that had been spilled. The toad quickly ate the rice. The maiden said "You must be hungry. You also look cold, too. Here, have some rice. Please stay right here on the warm hearth " She put a half scoop of rice on the hearth for the toad to eat. The toad looked up from his meal in gratitude and gobbled up the rice.

Well, from that day forward, the toad made his home on the warm hearth. He ate rice from the girl's hand. This way of life continued day after day, for a whole year. By this time, the toad had grown into a huge creature.

The village had been bothered by a huge snake that lived in a nearby cave. The snake played havoc with the rice paddies and the vegetable fields. It stole cows and horses. It even stole women and children. It then ate them at its leisure. This was a common occurence in the village. The villagers knew the location of the snake's cave. Master archers and hunters had come to slay the snake. However, none were successful. Year after year the snake continued to torment the village and its people. They never knew when the snake would come from its cave and attack. The villagers all lived in fear.

By this time the maiden's mother had died. She could not bear to see the suffering of the people. "There must be some way that I could save the village," she said. When guns and bullets had failed, she wondered what could a lone and weak girl do. After much thinking, she decided she would give her own life to save the village. "If a large number of people can be saved, it doesn't matter what happens to me," she thought. "I shall offer myself to the snake, and I shall ask the snake to never terrorize our village again. Where guns and arrows have failed, perhaps my pleas will succeed."

The day finally came for her to confront the snake. She put on her best clothing and slipped out of the house. Just before leaving, she called to the toad. "We have lived happily together for a long time, haven't we?  But today is our last day. I must go now. There will be no one to feed you rice tomorrow. When you get hungry, you will have to go outside and find your own food," she said with tears in her eyes. The toad had no understanding of the young woman's language. However, she talked to the toad in kind and gentle words, like talking to a child. All the while, the toad squatted on the hearth and looked at the maiden's face.

The girl found her way to the snake's cave. Forgetting her fear and sorrow, she stepped into the opening of the snake's den. "I have come in place of the villagers and offer you my life," she said. "Go ahead and eat me. But after this, please never bother the village again." Nothing happened, so the girl continued speaking into the cave. Soon, it became night. Finally, as the last light disappeared, the snake appeared from the hole. It's scales were gleaming green and its tongue was red like a flame. When the girl saw the terrible beast, she fainted on the spot.

Just then, a single stream of poison streaked toward the snake. It came from the toad, who the girl had cared for with much kindness. Though the toad was small, it spewed poison with all of its might to protect the girl. However, the snake would not be beaten easily. It began spewing poison right back at the toad. Thus, the toad and snake matched poison against poison. The streams crossing in the air like two sharp darts. Neither would give in. The battle continued for hours. There was no sound, no shouts of battle. Yet it was a deadly battle, nonetheless.

Gradually, the snake's poison started to weaken. On the other hand, the toad's poison became stronger. Still, the battle waged on. Suddenly, the snake let out a loud gasp and then fell down the rocky hillside. It's body twitched once, then twice, and finally he was dead. At the same time, the toad, worn out from the battle , collapsed. Finally, the battle had come to an end.

A lone villager chanced by the scene of the battle the next morning. He found the unconscious girl. He recognized her and took her home and nursed her back to health. In the meantime, a light rain awakened the toad and he hopped back to the maiden's home, too. He waited outside the door for the villager who was tending to the girl to leave. He entered only after the villager had left. The girl warmly greeted the toad from her bed. The toad then resumed his spot on the warm hearth. The villager checked in on the girl from time to time to see how she was doing. As one thing leads to another, the two fell in love with each and were married.

Never did the girl learn of the toad's brave deed in her behalf. Neither the girl nor the villager's learn how the snake had died. No one knew but the toad. He was content to remain in his cherished spot in the warm corner of the girl's kitchen, in all of the years to come.

To make matters worse, their son, the pumpkin eater, used to fart so often and so violently that eventually the other villagers refused to put up with him any more. The became tired of the horrible smell and the loud sounds that he made. One day, they drove him from the village. So, the pumpkin eater roamed from village to village begging for pumpkins to eat. People who did not know him, often gave him work, for he looked big and strong. They especially liked him, because he did not ask for money, only pumpkins. After a few days, he would be sent away when they saw how filthy he was.

One day, he came to a big Buddhist temple in the mountains. It was a very rich and famous temple with many priests. It was also famous that it had often fell victim to a band of robbers led by Jang. Jang  used to disguise himself as a local temple visitor and go to the temple to spy and formulate a plan. Then, at night he would lead his band of robbers to the temple. They would go in and carry off all of the valuables that they could. When the head monk saw the pumpkin eater standing before the gate of the temple, he warmly welcomed him. He thought that the large stranger would help keep the robbers away from the temple. He led him into the temple, bowing humbly, asked him what his favorite food was. "You look like a strong man, young friend" he said. "What is your favorite food." I eat nothing but pumpkins," he answered. "You had better cook as many as you can for me, say, a whole pot full."

So the monks at the temple entertained the young man with a whole pot full of pumpkin porridge. Then, they brought him another whole meal of pumpkin cakes. After he was fed, the monks asked for his help if the robbers returned. That evening, Jang the robber, came to the temple. When he saw the pumpkin eater's meal being prepared, he asked a monk, "Are you having a part tonight?" "Yes, we are having General Pumpkin as our special guest." How many soldiers does he have?" asked the robber. The monk smiled. "He has come alone, and will eat them all by himself." The robber was astounded to hear this. He decided to stay the night so that he could get a closer look at the general.

Some of the monks recognized the robber and went to tell their leader. He told the pumpkin eater that the man looting the temple was staying in the room next to his. The young man told the priests to wait until midnight and then take their drums and hide in every corner of the temple. Also, he wanted the priests to make sure that no candles remained lit in the temple. Meanwhile all of Jang's gang of robbers waited outside of the temple. They were now trying to break in.

Suddenly, out of the stillness of the night, there came a deep rumble. The air was filled with an unbearable stench. General Pumpkin had farted violently. A strong wind blew down the brick wall surrounding the temple. Jang and his men tried to run away. Every direction they ran was met with the sound of drums. In the end, Jang died in this strange warfare. His men were crushed under the falling bricks of the wall. The head monk thanked the pumpkin eater for his help. He invited him to stay in the temple for as long as he liked. He lived there for many years and was given all of the pumpkins that he could eat. Each year the monks planted a large area of the temple fields in pumpkins just for their special guest.

Without this book, I could not finish my Korean homework. I feel it is an absolute essential piece of my study materials. The name of the book is "Korean For Beginners". It was written by Henry J. Amen IV and Kyubyong Park and published by Tuttle. I find most Barnes and Nobles book stores have a copy. It is also under $20 US. Most available  Korean language books are in the $30 to $45 US range. They're expensive and most of them are worthless.

This book has some beginning elements like the korean number systems and some good vocabulary. However, that is not why you need this book. You need this book is you want to learn past and present tense verbs and adjectives. You need this book if you want to learn particles. You need this book if you want to learn sentence structure. Basically, if you really want to learn the Korean language, like your own, you need this book. If you want to learn some vocabulary and simple phrases, you have better choices in the book market.

I do not know why my current 2 schools do not explain the use of word tense and particles. We are asked questions in our workbook, but we aren't given any information on the rules on when to use the different word endings. Basically, most of us just guess and we usually guess wrong. I showed this book to my Korean tutor and she was impressed. She asked to borrow it, but I gave it to her for all the help that she has given to me. I went and bought another copy today. Without it, I couldn't complete the 12 pages of homework that I have to do for Wednesday's class.

As we get further into our Dynamic Korean 1 workbook, it is becoming more difficult for me. I am spending more hours studying and understanding less. I wish we had an extra hour of class time so we could get a better understanding of the material before we leave the class. I am having to look to the internet and other sources for help.

This week, we went over more family member names. It seems almost impossible to learn the correct name of each person in your family unless you grew up in a Korean household. Most Koreans refer to each other by names like brother and younger sister, instead of using their given names like Tim or Sara. This may be changing, but I'm not sure.

This week we covered a lot of present tense and past tense adjectives and verbs. We also spent a lot of time on irregular words. Just like English, there are a tremendous amount of words that do not follow the standard set of conjugation rules. It was much easier to learn these English exceptions over my 50 years, than try to learn all of the Korean exceptions in less than a year.

Instead of just supplying a simple answer, we are having to write more full sentences. Supposedly, we are ready to do this. I can write very simple sentences, but I am trouble completing some of these exercises. I guess the important thing is to keep learning as much as possible. It is going to take some time. What I don't understand or learn this semester, I can work on next semester.

I sometimes forget that I can't learn another language immediately. I forget that it took me a long time to learn English. I just hope it doesn't take me another 50 years to be able to effectively learn Korean.

My Favorite Pottery Glaze Book 내 좋아하는 도자기 유약 책

This book has become essential to creating and using pottery glazes in America. The book covers every cone 10 glaze category from shino to celadon to copper red. Each category has 10 to 20 variations of tested glaze recipes. Most of these are "borrowed" from the top potters in the United States. For each glaze type, there are recommended firing schedules. Also, there is a guide on how thick the glazes should be mixed and applied to the pot's surface.

I have had very good luck when I've tried the various glazes. I think a lot of that has to do with how you fire your kiln. That is at least as important as any glaze recipe. Picking a pottery glaze is not like picking a paint for your house. You must test, test, test. When I am looking for a new glaze, I will test several different glazes on test tiles. Then, I'll pick one or two to work with. Sometimes you need to adjust the recipe or firing schedule to your own preference.

I would like to add that there are some other good glaze books. I like Tom Coleman's books. However, I have a hard time getting my glazes to look right. I would like to have a little better idea of how he fires each one. There are some good cone 6 books, but I've never fired to that temperature.

This glaze book is the best one available to American potters. I don't think it would be a good book anywhere else though. The raw materials in places like South Korea and Australia would be significantly different that what we have. This would drastically alter all glazes.

Every time that I go to my Korean grocery store, H Mart, I buy a small snack. This week a bought some really good tasting cookies. They are called Binch and are made by Lotte. There is a graham cookie that is dipped in chocolate on one side. Each one come wrapped individually, which should make you eat less, but it doesn't. It just takes a little longer.

I'm still playing it safe with the Korean snacks. They have squid flavored chips and things that I have no idea what they are. I just know that they are on the snack isle. I notice that the snack isle is popular with the non Koreans. Someone has to buy those extra large shirts.

When the woman reached the next hill, the tiger was waiting. "If you give me a rice cake, I won't eat you" said the tiger. Again, the poor woman threw the tiger a piece of rice cake. The tiger quickly ate the rice cake and raced to the next hill. Before long, she had given the tiger all of her rice cakes. When she had no more, the tiger ate her.

As it became darker and darker, and finally it became night. The children were very worried. The Mother had not come home. The girl said to her brother " I'm scared. Where's Mother?" As the boy was older, he thought he should put on a smile and said "Don't worry. She'll be home soon. Let's wait a little longer." Just at that moment, they heard a loud noise. Someone was trying to open the front door. Then they heard a voice say "Children, open the door. It's Mother." "Oh! It's Mother!" said the little girl. She jumped to open the door. The boy grabbed her. "Wait!" said the boy. "That voice does not sound like Mother." Then, the voice said "I caught a cold, my throat is sore." "Stop playing around and open the door" the voice said.

The boy held his sister tight. He wasn't sure what to do. "Show me your hand" he shouted. A big yellow paw pushed through the paper window. "That's not Mother's hand!" cried the little girl. Hearing this, the voice outside said "I worked very hard today. My hands are all rough now. Stop playing games and open the door!" Still, the children hesitated to open the door. "You must be very hungry. Let me in and I'll make you something to eat" said the tiger as it hurried into the kitchen wearing Mother's clothes.

The boy felt bad. "Poor Mother," he thought. "I'll help with supper." But when he walked into the kitchen, he saw a tiger's tail coming from under his mother's dress.  "It's a tiger!" he told himself. Quickly and calmly he led his sister outside. "That's not Mother in the kitchen," he said. "It's a tiger! We have to hide." Back inside the kitchen, the tiger was warming himself by the fire in the kitchen oven. After resting there for awhile, he licked his lips and said to himself "It's time for supper. I'm going to make a nice meal out of those two kids."

Then, he flung open the kitchen doors. However, the house was empty. "Where did my supper run off to?" the tiger wondered. He ran through the house throwing chairs  and breaking dishes as he looked for the children. Then, he saw the girl's shadow move. "They climbed up the tree. How silly they are! he said. "Children!" he called up to him. "What are doing climbing trees at night? You get down here this instant!" the tiger yelled. The young girl began to tremble with fear, but together the children stayed up the tree.

The tiger then started climbing the tree. However, every time he got halfway up the tree, he slid back down to the ground. "How did you two climb up there? the tiger shouted from below. "The tree is so slippery that your poor mother can't climb it. Come down now!" he said. The boy decided to play a trick on the tiger. "It was easy, Mother. Get some sesame oil and rub it all over the trunk." the boys said. The tiger believed what the boy said. He did exactly as the boy said. He brought a big jar of sesame oil and spread it all over the trunk.

Then, the tiger tried to climb the tree again. Of course, the trunk was so slick that the trunk was even more slippery than before.The tiger slid down the tree so fast that he landed hard on his tail. "Oh! he cried. The girl could not help laughing. "Silly old fool!" she laughed. "If you used an ax, climbing the tree would be easy" she then added. Just as soon as she said this, the young girl realized that she shouldn't have spoken and she stopped laughing.

But, it was too late. The tiger heard what she had said. He found an axe and started striking the tree. He pulled out the axe and then struck the tree, higher this time. Using the cuts in the tree, the tiger continued climbing higher and higher. The girl saw the tiger coming slowly up the tree and then looked up into the sky. "Oh, Heaven, please save us" she prayed. "Please send us a rope." Just as the girl had asked, a rope dropped gently down from the sky. The girl and boy grabbed the rope and were pulled up away into the sky.

At exactly that moment, the tiger reached the highest branch of the tree. Watching the children disappear into the clouds, he became very angry. Repeating what he heard the girl say, he prayed, "Oh Heaven send me a rope too." A second rope dropped gently to the tree. "Follow that rope!" the tiger roared as he grabbed on. The Heavenly rope carried the tiger high above the ground. However, the rope was old and rotten. The rope broke and the tiger fell to the earth below. Every bone in his body was broken. The two children kept going higher and higher.

The boy became the Sun, shining all day long. The girl became the Moon, lighting dark roads at night. But the girl was frightened and didn't want to be all alone at night. So, her brother changed places with her and became the Moon. Ever since that day, the girl was called Miss Sun and the boy was called Mr. Moon. No one could look at the face of the once shy Miss Sun, because now she is brighter than anything.

I have a lot of books that I take to my Korean language schools. It is sort of confusing to explain what I take to class. First, I have the same teacher at both of my schools. We also use the same workbook in both, Dynamic Korean.

For my intermediate Korean language class at HKEC, we started out with Dynamic Korean 2, but we had to go back to Dynamic Korean 1 since our class was not ready to advance yet. We didn't have to buy the textbook for class. Our teacher copies the pages that are needed to complete the workbook. She also gives us some extra handout of vocabulary each week. I put all of the pages in a 3 ring binder.

I have basically the same set of materials at my intermediate Korean language school at DRAW. We started out at the beginning of Dynamic Korean 1. It is really nice to have homework that is easy. Of course, in a few weeks it will get difficult again. I also have another 3 ring binder to keep all of the pages that she copies for this class.

In addition to my regular class work materials, I carry my tutoring materials. These are lessons that I plan. I work on whatever aspect of the Korean language that interests me that week. I also have all of my materials from the Beginning Korean class that I took last year. Usually, there is a grammar or vocabulary book in the bag also. If nothing else, I should have a stronger back at the end of my classes this year. Hopefully, my knowlege will be strengthened too.

It is the perfect size. It also looks good enough to probably make it on my next trip to South Korea. While it wasn't my favorite price, free, it was still a good deal. I paid just $10, on sale. A few days later the boy saw another boy of his own age splashing in the water, screaming for help. The boy asked the tree, " Father, may the boy also ride on your back." "No, he cannot"  said the cinnamon tree to his surprised son. The boy begged his father to let the other boy ride on the tree's back. "If we don't help him, he will drown" said the boy. But the cinnamon tree was firm and refused his son's request. The boy kept pleading with his father, the cinnamon tree. Finally, the cinnamon tree gave in to his son. "Okay, do as you wish." So the boy pulled the drowning boy from the water and helped him ride the back of the tree.

For many days they all floated around the world. One day, they found an island at last. The boys, the ants, and the mosquitoes got off the tree and walked around the island. The tree floated off to look for more land. The 2 boys found an old woman and her 2 granddaughters living on the island. The five were the only people left living in the world. After many days of rains and clouds, the sky cleared and the water slowly started to dry up. The 2 boys lived in the old woman's house and farmed her land.

The old woman liked the son of the cinnamon tree. He was polite, kind, and very hard working. The other boy was none of those things. He became jealous of the cinnamon tree's son. He decided to make the cinnamon tree's son look bad in the eyes of the old woman by telling her a lie.

"My friend is very clever and he's so skillful that if you dump a basket of rice in the sand, he can pick out each grain and put it back into the basket." The old woman was amazed. "Is that so. That is really amazing. Let's give it a try" said the old woman. So, she spilled a basket of rice into the sand. Then, she told the cinnamon tree's son to pick up all of the rice and put it into the basket. The boy went over to the sand and tried to pick up the rice. It was very difficult and he was unable to gather a single grain of rice. Suddenly, there appeared a group of ants. They began to pick up each grain of rice and place it into the basket. In no time at all, they had picked up the grains of rice and put them back into the basket. Seeing the results, the old woman liked the cinnamon tree's son even more. 

Before long, it was time for the boys to get married. The old woman called to the boys and said "The flood has made sure that there are no more people on earth. You must marry and have many children. The house on the hill has 2 rooms. One of my granddaughter is in the room on the east side of the house and the other is waiting in room on the west side. Choose one room and marry the girl inside."

The son of the cinnamon tree wanted to marry the girl who was smart and kindhearted. Just in time, the mosquitoes he had saved during the flood came buzzing to him. They whispered in his ear " Go into the room on the east side of the house. East, East. East." Inside the smart and kindhearted girl was waiting with her head bowed. The boy married the girl and they lived happily together .

The bad boy who had been saved from the sea went into the west room. He married the girl waiting there. They lived many unhappy years with each other until they learned to treat each other with kindness and respect. Both couples had many sons and daughters.

I'm going to start my pottery book collection with one of my favorites. It is called "Cushing's Handbook". It also goes by the name "The Orange Handbook". It is the single best source on how to alter glazes and clay bodies. The book covers the properties of different clays and other raw materials. It also talks about absorbtion and shrinkage rates. There is a lot information about various types of clay slips. It discusses firing schedules and other technical information about kilns and firing. It also has some basic recipes for clay bodies and information on how to adapt them to your particular needs.

The most important part of this book concerns glazes. Val cushing is known as one of the premier glaze chemists of American ceramics. He explains how different raw materials act in glazes. He discusses how to alter glazes to work at different firing temperatures. He also provides many base glazes that you can add oxides and colorants to form your own glazes. He goes into depth on how to test glazes.

This book contains much more information than what I have provided. If you want a book that has pretty pictures, this isn't it. It also doesn't give you a set of glazes and tell you how they will look on your pot. This book is for potters who are a little more advanced and want to learn how to formulate their own glazes and clay bodies. Still, there is something in this book that every potter will find valuable.

Now for the bad news! This book is almost impossible to obtain, unless you are a student at Alfred University in New York. There are a couple copies of this book on Amazon. They are currently selling for between $150 to $180 a piece. No pottery book is worth that, not even this one. Still, this book is so valuable that there are people willing to pay that much. I found out that you can contact Mr. Cushing by email and he will sell you a copy. In 2008, I paid $25 plus $3 shipping. About 3 months ago, I helped someone buy a copy of the Cushing Handbook. She told me that her email was returned in less than 24 hours with instructions on buying the book. I had the same experience. I'm not sure what she paid, but I'm sure that the price has gone up a few dollars. To order the book you need to email Mr. Cushing at cushingve@frontier.net . He should contact you and tell you how to receive the book. I paid by check and it did not take long for me to receive the book. He could be out of town, so it's possible his response could be delayed for awhile. I promise that you will be glad that you ordered this book.

In the dawn of human history, people used to eat one another. This was because in those days, people would sometimes appear in the form of cattle, so they were used for food. This continued on until one man set out in search of a better world. In his travels, he met a monk. The monk asked him about his reason for such a long journey. "This world is horrible. I hate it, for men eat one another. I am on my way to find a place where men do not do such evil things."

The monk knew the hearts of men, so he gave the traveller some advice. "Your quest will be in vain, for no matter where you go, you will find men are the same. You should go back to where you came." The traveller replied, "I cannot go back, for if I do the men will surely eat me. Isn't there anything that I can do?" The monk told the man, "Eat green onions. When you eat green onions you change to human form, even if you start out in the form of an ox."

The traveller hurried home. As he got close to home, he met some of his fellow villagers. He greeted them cheerfully, "Hello there! How have you been? I haven't seen you for awhile." The villagers didn't answer the traveller. Instead, they surrounded him. "A most healthy looking ox!" said one of the men. They then tied him to a post. "Let's eat him together." I made some wood fire clay for some bowls a few years ago. I tried to formulate it based on my limited knowledge of Japanese clay bodies. It did not turn out as well as I wanted. The raw clay did not flash or hold ash like the commercial clay bodies that I use.

After I mixed the clay, I added a cup of orange juice to every 50 pounds of clay. This was on the advice of a friend. I let the clay age for almost a year. When I opened the first bag, I almost passed out. The smell was horrible. What was supposed to be an off white clay was grey to black in color. My first thought was to throw the 500 pounds of clay away. However, I left a small chunk of the clay on a table overnight. When I saw it in the morning, it was the color that I wanted. The black color, most likely due to mold, was gone.

So, I threw bowls with all 500 pounds of clay. My studio definitely smelled bad for a few weeks. The clay was extremely plastic. You could push the clay really wide and thin and it would not crack or break. It was unlike any clay that I had ever seen. It was also very slick. You almost didn't need water to throw it.

Here is another one of the bowls that I made with the clay. I sort of like the bowl, but I just hate the clay body. I had a lot of fun pushing and tearing the clay. I would like to throw some bowls similar to these in the future.

Yesterday I started learning Korean at a new school. This new school just opened and it has a beginner and intermediate class. The intermediate class teacher also teaches me in an intermediate class at another school. Not only do I have the same teacher at both schools, but we use the same workbook.

The new school plans to have to several levels above the intermediate as my class advances. Hopefully, I can stay with the class and advance as well. About 1/2 to 1/3 of the people in the 2 classes also attend the other school. It is nice to see some familiar faces and have someone to talk to.

The makeup of this class is much different from the class at my old school. Here, there are 2 of us about 45 to 50 years old. Then, there are about 6 people from 20 to 28. The rest of the class is made up of young Korean American children. They are in the age 7 to 12 range. Their Korean parents want them to learn their native language. Most of them can speak fairly well, but their parents want them to learn more.

Somehow, I let learning Korean take over my life. I attend 2 hours of Korean instruction at my old school, 2 hours at my new school, 2 hours with my Korean tutor, and many, many hours of homework. I also watch some Korean videos in my spare time. I'm progressing, though much slower that I want. This week, I had around 45 pages of homework. Some of it was optional, but I need to do everything possible to learn Korean. Who knows, I might be able to use it to impress someone one day. Right now, my dog is very impressed with my Korean, if I speak it while filling up her food bowl.
