I love to wood fire. I love to get kilns hot, really hot. I don't think you can fire too hot or too long. Actually, I know you can't. I have seen many pots that failed during a really hot and long firing. Anyway, there's nothing wrong with losing a few pots. My firing motto will always be "High Risk, High Reward".

To measure the progress of a pottery firing we use cones. A set of cones will bend at different times according to how long temperatures have been held at a certain point. High firing usually consists of going until cone 10 bends. Wood firings can go much hotter. Some firing can go way beyond cone 10. Train kilns and anagama firing are usually very hot and we occasionally fire to cone 12 or a little more.

This cone pack has gone far past cone 12. Cone 12 is almost completely melted. I have actually seen a few cone packs were the cone 12 completely melted into a puddle. I wish I knew what the actual cone would have been.
