Sixth Day Of Intermediate Korean Class 중급 한국어 클래스의 여섯 번째 날

As we get further into our Dynamic Korean 1 workbook, it is becoming more difficult for me. I am spending more hours studying and understanding less. I wish we had an extra hour of class time so we could get a better understanding of the material before we leave the class. I am having to look to the internet and other sources for help.

This week, we went over more family member names. It seems almost impossible to learn the correct name of each person in your family unless you grew up in a Korean household. Most Koreans refer to each other by names like brother and younger sister, instead of using their given names like Tim or Sara. This may be changing, but I'm not sure.

This week we covered a lot of present tense and past tense adjectives and verbs. We also spent a lot of time on irregular words. Just like English, there are a tremendous amount of words that do not follow the standard set of conjugation rules. It was much easier to learn these English exceptions over my 50 years, than try to learn all of the Korean exceptions in less than a year.

Instead of just supplying a simple answer, we are having to write more full sentences. Supposedly, we are ready to do this. I can write very simple sentences, but I am trouble completing some of these exercises. I guess the important thing is to keep learning as much as possible. It is going to take some time. What I don't understand or learn this semester, I can work on next semester.

I sometimes forget that I can't learn another language immediately. I forget that it took me a long time to learn English. I just hope it doesn't take me another 50 years to be able to effectively learn Korean.
