Korean Folk Tale: The Donkey's Egg 한국 민속 이야기: 당나귀의 계란

A long time ago there lived a farmer who lived far from the nearest town. He was a very kind man, but not very smart. The people in the nearest village teased him that he did foolish things.

One day, the farmer's wife gave him some cloth that she had weaved. "Go to the market and sell this cloth. Use the money for something that we need", she said. The farmer headed to the village with the cloth strapped on his back. The market was full of people. The market was filled with many different kinds of goods. The farmer went from one stall to another, looking for something that his wife would like.

The farmer spent all day looking for something to buy. Just before dark, he remembered the cloth and sold it to a shop owner. Now that he had the money in his hand, he thought to himself. "I am running late, I must buy something quickly." He wandered around the market for awhile longer. He passed by a fruit stand. In front of the stand there was a basket full of watermelons. "I wonder what these are. I've never seen anything like this before." He called to the owner of the shop, "What are these green things here?"

The fruit stand owner tried hard to keep from laughing at the foolish man. He wondered what kind of man had never seen a watermelon. The fruit stand owner decided to have a little fun with the farmer. The fruit stand owner looked around and softly said, "There are donkey eggs." The farmer reached down and picked one of the watermelons up. He had a look of amazement on his face. He asked, "How does a donkey come out of this?"

The owner of the fruit stand told him to cover it with a blanket for one month, then it cracks by itself and a baby donkey comes out. The farmer spent all of his money on the watermelon. He skipped all of the way home as he thought how lucky he was to trade some cloth for a donkey.

When he got home, the farmer's wife greeted him and asked, "What did you get for the cloth? What do you have there?" He proudly proclaimed, "It's a donkey egg! If we cover it with a blanket, in one month, a baby donkey will come out." "Wonderful!" the farmer's overjoyed wife exclaimed. "Let's cover it right away." She went into the kitchen and made a small fire in the oven and placed the covered watermelon nearby.

The farmer and his wife eagerly counted the days until the egg was supposed to hatch. Finally, one month had passed. The couple threw open the blanket, their hearts beating with excitement. "What an aweful smell!", they shouted. They covered their noses and shouted in anger, "What happened? We did exactly as we were told. Why did the egg rot. Where is our donkey?" The farmer took the rotten watermelon and threw it into the garden.

Now, there just so happened to be a baby donkey lying in the grass near where the farmer threw the watermelon. The baby donkey was startled when the farmer threw the watermelon.
