I have not used my credit card or atm cards when I've travelled to South Korea. I always use cash, even when I have to pay for several days at a hotel. Maybe because I'm older, but I just don't want to use the cards when I am overseas. I do however the cards for emergency situations, like a medical emergency.

Currency exchange places are fairly easy to find in the larger cities. If you are travelling to some small towns, you might want to pick up some extra money before you leave. You can exchange money at the airport, banks, and independent exchange stores. I prefer the independent stores, because I usually get a better rate there. However, there is such a small difference in the exchange rates between various places that it is not worth shopping around much.

The exchange rate should be very close to the rate that is quoted on television or in the internet. For example, if the exchange rate is 1200 Won to $1 US, I would expect you should get around 1190 to 1195 Won. At banks, the rate would be closer to 1175 to 1180. I actually got more than the internet rate once. So, the exchange rate ratio is very low.

Before I left Seoul to travel to Sokcho, I exchanged $500 US. I knew I had to buy a hotel for several days and I wasn't sure if I could find a place to exchange money. Every town has a bank, but since I would be climbing mountains during the day, I wouldn't be in town when it was open. $500 US in Korean Won can be a fairly thick pile of bills that will make it difficult fold your wallet. You can get some 50,000 Won (about $50) but I don't get those unless I am paying for hotel rooms. So, it really helps if you have a money belt.
