A Section Of The East German Wall In Seoul

I wish that I could remember where I saw this section of the East German wall. I think it is was near Cheonggyecheon Stream or Insadong. It was somewhere in that section of Seoul. At first I didn't know what it was. When I read the plaque that was nearby, I was shocked. I could not believe that it was so open to the public. I don't think you would see this in America. Too many people would feel the need to spray paint their own message on it. You would also have people trying to chisel out pieces of concrete to take home. Maybe I feel this way because I live near a big city where this is common. I know that it is only a small group of people who would do this. However, they keep the rest of us from experiencing something like this. I admire the respect that the Korean people show this important piece of history.

I feel that this section of the East German wall may have a deeper meaning to the Korean people than to me personally. It was part of a physically barrier that divided a country. On one side of the wall, there were free, democratic people. On the other side were people under great government control. Many families were kept apart after the wall's construction. This is very similar to what is currently happening in Korea. The difference was that one day the wall was torn down and the divided Germany became one again. I think all people want to see this happen to the people of Korean. I hope the suffering will be over soon.
