In February I was able to attend the 2011 Mascabal Woodfire Workshop as an uninvited guest. This is an annual event that started in South Korea. The workshop always includes several potters from other countries. As the event has grown, it is becoming more of an international event. This year it was held in Brenham, Texas, USA. I think it is being held in China next year. Kim Yong Moon is the head of the festival.

I kept 2 pots from the workshop. I gave the rest of the pots away. I had planned on my pots being fired without any glaze. However, I am very grateful that the South Korean potters glazed them. I have no idea what glazes were used. I sort of like that too.

The areas where 2 or more glazes meet is always the area of the most interest. I wish that I would get around to making a light box to photograph my pots. It is impossible to bring out the true colors when the photos are taken outdoors in the shade.

The second pot had 3 different glazes on it. The white or clear glaze was an unusual choice for a wood kiln, but it worked. I would have loved to have watched the Korean potters glaze all of the pots.

Here is the closeup of the second bottle. The greenish glaze definitely has a lot of iron in it.

The pots have interesting little texture bumps in the glaze layer. This was due to using a leaf blower to blow the ashes from the ember bed back into the kiln. This was done late in the firing. Daphna, the Canadian potter, spent several hours on this task. I thought that the pots were going to have really rough surfaces. I was surprised to see that the pots only had a few small bumps. It makes the pots much more interesting.

Here is another picture of the kiln that we used. The noborigama was built by Doug Peck. It was the kiln's initial firing. Doug had previously attended the mascabal workshop when it was in South Korea. Doug and his wife Misty were great hosts and I thank him for his hospitality.
