Smiling Face Bottle 웃는 얼굴 병

Wood fired pots are placed on clay balls that help prevent the pots from sticking to the kiln or to other pots. The way that the clay wads are placed can be a design element. You can form shapes on purpose or by accident. Personally, I prefer to place the wads randomly and see what happens. Other potters enjoy drawing shapes by directing the flame around the wads.

This pot has the subtle form of a smiling face. We used very large wads to hold this bottle in place. Too many potters use tiny wads and I feel that they are missing out on an unique opportunity to create the surface of their pots.

This is another pot that is underfired. It needs to be fired for several more days to fully melt the ash that is on its surface. I definitely need to put a bunch of the bottle in my next wood firing.
