Fish Hook Bottle 물고기 후크 병

This bottle was fired in a large wood fired train kiln. It was made out of white stoneware and it was not glazed. The color comes from the clay body and millions of tiny wood ash particles that landed on the bottle during the firing. The color is enhanced by the gases that are released when the wood is fired. We also spray some potassium carbonate on the wood before we add it to the kiln. The potassium adds a little blue, purple, and grey to the glaze. The final aspect to achieving the bottle's color is how we finish the kiln firing. This bottle was reduction cooled. After we reached out final temperature after 72 hours, we closed up the kiln as tight as possible. We then added a small amount of wood every time the kiln quit smoking. This went on for another 8 or 10 hours. While the reduction cooling is time consuming, especially after a long firing, the colors that result are worth it.
