This bottle was placed in the firebox of a large wood fired train kiln. The temperatures here can get intense. This pot was probably heated to over 2300 degrees for at least 3 full days. Being exposed to these high heat levels can cause problems. If you place the pot on top of seashells, they can flux the body with their added salt content. It leaves an ugly scar. However, you can place the pot on pieces of pottery plaster. They hold up to the high heat and remove easily after the firing. The composition of plaster and seashells are very similiar, with the exception of the salt content. However, they do leave an ugly mark also. Though not as ugly as a fluxed seashell scar. This was my first experience using plaster wads. I think they will work best with red clay pots. The mark from the plaster wadding will not be as noticeable.
