The dimensions of my kiln are : 23 inches wide, 40 inches long, and 30 inches tall. It is easy to increase the height by adding more bricks to the walls. I built the kiln out of K26 insulated soft bricks. I added one inch of ceramic fiber around the outside of the bricks. Then, I constructed a frame of sheet metal and angle iron. My roof is made up of sections of the insulated soft bricks. The bricks have a hole drilled through the middle of them. I have a piece of 3/4 inch threaded rod that holds them together. The roof sections are light weight and are removed to load and unload the kiln. This design is known as a flat top kiln.
The kiln was super easy to construct. I don't think I would construct the metal frame if I had to build it again. You could build it in a few hours, easily. The materials are readily available. It fires like a dream. As a matter of fact, I bisque all of my pots with this kiln.

Here is a little more detail on the roof sections. I do have to rethread the roof sections after a few firings. The metal rods that I use to hold them together start to weaken. I found this roof is easy to construct. There is no arch to construct, therefore it doesn't take much skill. The only drawback would be that you are limited in how wide you can build the kiln. This would not be a good roof choice on a large kiln. After a few hours into the firing, I place a two inch layer of ceramic fiber on the roof to give it extra insulation. It is really effective at saving me fuel costs.

I fire with propane. I use 100 pound tanks that hold 23 gallons of propane each. The tanks are the largest size that are portable. I load them in the back of my truck and drive them to my propane dealer about 1/2 mile away. I can bisque with about 8 gallons. I can fire to cone 10 with about 20 gallons. For me, it the cheapest way to fire. To use natural gas, I would have to run a new line about 300 feet. To hook up an electrical kiln to my house current would be very expensive. My house is over 60 years old and I would have to replace the fuse box and who knows what else.
I bought my burners at my local ceramic store. My propane dealer helped me set up my hoses, conections, and regulators. I run at full pressure, which I think is 22 pounds. There is one detail that is very, very important. You must get the proper size orifice for the burner. I called Ward Burner Systems and he sized and sold me the orifices. They will vary based on your gas source and pressure. Also, they will vary based on the size of your kiln, how hot you fire, and how fast you fire. I recommend letting a professional size it for you, it is just too important.

I vary the number of burners when I fire. I use one burner when I bisque. To fire to cone 10, I fire the first half of the firing with one burner to keep the firing slow. Then, I add the second burner and I can easily get to cone 10. I also use a pyrometer to to help regulate the firing. This is in addition to using cones to mark the end of the firings. I fire slow. I usually bisque in 10 to 12 hours. I increase the time if I have a kiln load of porcelain or have any thick pieces in the kiln. When I high fire, it is usually in 8 to 10 hours. I usually fire for 8 but some techniques require a longer firing.
Now for one of the parts of firing that I do not like. I check my pyrometer every 15 minute during every firing. It is about 60 yards to the kiln from my house. In a 12 hour bisque firing this is around 50 trips to the kiln. It makes for a long day. It is during those times that I wish I had an electric kiln.
