My main clay body is a white stoneware. I use Laguna's B mix. It holds up to the heat of the firebox and flashes well in the back of the kiln. I also like a couple of different commercial porcelains and a couple of red clays. I am in constant search of a new clay body. Most commercially made clay bodies work reasonably well, but don't give me the surfaces that I want. The only way to solve this is to make my own. Making clay can be simple with the right equipment or manually challenging without. I rarely have access to the equipment to make clay. However, this doesn't stop me from making new clay bodies.

I have used the Peter Pugger at Northern Arizona University. You simply put in some water and add some dry clay. Then, you hit the mix button and after a few minutes, hit the pug button. I usally repug it a second time, but I'm not sure it is necessary. It produces wonderful clay with ease. I have taken the clay directly from the pugger to the wheel. The clay is not very plastic, but it still throws well.

I have also used a Blue Bird clay mixer. It is a pure clay mixer without a pugger. You still have a lot of hand wedging after you make your clay. The Blue Bird is made out of stainless steel. The clay sticks to the sides during the mixing process. You have to constantly stop the machine and scrape the sides of the mixer to keep it working correctly. It is physically demanding to mix a lot of clay with this piece of equipment. However, it is worth it to make a really good custom clay body.

I have mixed most of my home made clay bodies with a simple hand drill. It is a lot of work. However, it is affordable and produces great results. . I simply measure out the dry materials and soak them for a couple of days. I pour out the excess water and mix the clay slip with a drill. I let the clay age for a few weeks and then dry it out on plaster bats. I then bag the clay and age it for a few months. It produces clay that is as good as any machine clay. It is just time consuming. It can be performed by everyone, regardless of space or budget. I have made a couple of tons of clay with this method. One small warning about this method, buy a quality drill. Cheap drills will fail after just a few hours. I have used the same DeWalt drill to make all of my previous batches of home made clay. It does make some unusual noises now. However, it still works.

The last method that I have used is to simply combine 2 or more clay bodies together by hand wedging. I like to combine a porcelain with a darker clay. This can increase its flashing capabilities and produce a glassier surface. You can also add is some large feldspar or some sand. I still use this method.
