The simplest way that I found to build a roof was to make several sets of roof modules. These consist of soft fire bricks that are threaded onto a steel rod. Make the brick module about as wide as the outside of the kiln chamber walls. The brick modules do not weigh very much when you use soft bricks. Several layers of ceramic fiber would also be a way of constructing a cheap and efficient roof. Very rarely, a piece of the bricks will fall on a pot. There is a drawback to using the roof modules. The rods that hold the bricks will go bad over time. Most of the time, you can simply thread the bricks on another rod. Sometimes the bricks will be cracked and will need to be replaced. I used to use 2 rods to support the bricks. Now, I use 1 larger rod. The bricks do not crack as much. The simplest way to prevent this is to place a set of shelves between your upper pots and the brick modules. I hardly ever do this myself.
