In this photo set, James Coquia demonstrates the art of hiki dashi. James was one of the students at Northern Arizona University. He has studied under some of our greatest potters. He really knows woodfiring. I think of James as more of a ceramic artist than a potter. I hate to get into my view of ceramic artist versus potter, but James could be either one.

Hiki dashi can be performed in most kilns, in particular most wood kilns. There just needs to be direct access to the pots that you want to use. Loading is very critical. The pots need to be placed where they can be lifted out of the kiln without causing damage to any of the other pots or to the kiln. Also, pot choice is important. You need a shape that you can bring out of the kiln without any chance of falling.
James uses small cups when he does hiki dashi. He makes little support that the cups rest on. The cups sit on small seashells. I think clay wadding would tend to stay stuck to the pots. The seashells allow a clean release.

The next step is lifting the pot out of the kiln. We use a long metal pole. Rebar tends to hold up to the heat long enough to pull the cups out. It is also long enough to be safe. Speaking of safety, the area needs to be clear of people and anything that might catch of fire.
It does take a little skill to snag the pot. You don't want to knock any other pots over or drop the hiki dashi pot.

After the cup is out of the kiln, you have several options in how you want to treat it. You could use it like they do in making raku. Either dropping into water or into plant based material would be an option. I have seen some that were simply allowed to air cooled. I didn't like these as much. The ash glaze was a little too transparent due to a lack of color.
James likes to reduce the cups by rolling them around with some wood strips. It definitely gives the ash green some color. Plus it is very entertaining to watch. Some might call it performance art. Some might call it showing off. It's your call.
