Kiss Pots 포츠 키스

I had my best kiln firing back in 2009. As usual, it was at Northern Arizona University. The firing was reduction cooled in the double wide train kiln. Personally, I have never seen wood fired pots that looked like this. I guess it could be a once in a lifetime firing. Hopefully, it is not.

The reason that I named these kiss pots, is that the two pots were gently joined together sometime during the firing. You can see that the scars match. One scar is in, one is out. Part of the problem is that I make the bases of my pots too narrow. However, I want to emphasize the curve of the pot. I don't know how to do this with a wide base. It sometimes causes the pots to tip over if not wadded very carefully.

The first pot has a nice long drip that ends in a perfect spot. There is a hint of blue underneath the top layer. This is due to reduction cooling and an addition of potassium carbonate that was sprayed on the wood. There is a reddish orange flashing that is really bright. There is also evidence of the flame path due to the patterns that are formed by the various thickness of the ash layer. There is an amzing amount of colors in the pot. Also, there are matte, shiny, and textured surfaces on the pot. I got lucky that I had a bunch of pots in this kiln. There will be many posts about these pots in the future.

I think that the surface of the second pot is a little better than the first. However, I don't like the porportions of the pot that much. It is a little wide for its height. Also, the scar is less attractive.These are things  that can be overlooked with the coloration of the pots. I think that the pots have to be displayed together. The scars unite them. They tell a story of the process. I just think that alone, the scars detract too much and they are not very attractive.
