A few years ago I made a trade with a fellow potter. I had him send me some bowls to fire in a wood kiln. This was partially done to get a closeup look at his bowls. I think that they are exceptional. Since then, I've tried many times to create something similar. However, I just don't have the skills at this time. I need to keep working on my throwing. One day I'll be able to make some bowls like he does.

My friend, Cory Lum, mailed me a couple boxes of bisqued  bowls. There was a pretty good survival rate. However, some really good bowls were lost. A couple more were cracked and I thought it would be a bad idea to fire them. I did not want the bowls to break in the firing and ruin another pot that was placed close by.

Here are some of his larger bowls. I guess that you could call them tea bowls or chawan. I always have a hard time calling a bowl a tea bowl. I've never used a bowl to drink from. I have no idea what makes a good tea bowl. Whatever you call them, they are magnificent. The bowls were made out of a variety of clays and fired in several different kilns. You can get a pretty idea of what you can expect in a wood firing.

Here is a nice group of small cups. I would guess that you would call them saki cups. I really like the carved feet that he added to the cups. Again this is a pretty good idea of what you can expect.

So what is the moral to this story? Make friends with your local wood firer! We are really cool people. Just be aware that we will be asking you to cut and haul wood for hours on end. I think if you look at Cory's cups and bowls, you would know that it is totally worth it.

Just to let you know, Cory didn't cut or haul any wood. We made a mutually beneficial trade that we were both happy with.

Now go out there and find a wood fire potter and buy him lunch.
