American Folk Dance Teams At The Anseong Folk Festival 미국의 민속 무용 팀 안성 민속 축제

For the second year, I attended the Anseong Folk Dance Festival in South Korea. There were dance teams from several dozen countries. It was a joy to watch the dancers and learn a little about the culture of the different countries. My favorite dancers were from Korea and Japan.

Last year, I only spent a few hours at the festival. I wondered what kind of dancing would be considered folk dancing in the United States. This year, I found out the answer. The United States had 2 dance teams. One of the groups consisted of Native Americans. The other group consisted of cloggers. I did not actually see them dance, but I did see them in a small parade that was held at the end of the day.

Korean Soybean Paste Soup 한국 콩 풀 수프

My Korean tutor used to cook me a pot of soybean paste soup during some of our sessions sometimes. It was easy to make and cooked quickly. You can cook it thousands of different ways and they are all good. The basic recipe is to use equal parts squash, potatoes, and onion. To this add 2 or 3 large spoonfuls of soybean paste and 2 or 3 heaping spoons of red pepper powder. After that you can add any other type of meat or vegetables. I have some Korean friends who like to put Spam in theirs. It tastes really good. So, if you are trying to eat healthy in the New Year and want some good spicy Korean food, this soybean paste soup is a good idea.

Large Abstract Painting 대형 추상 회화

I have been replacing some furniture and other things inside my house. I needed a large painting to go in one of the rooms. I had several big canvases and a box of paints, so I thought I would try to do it myself. In the past I have taken some drawing and painting classes. However, I have never painted an abstract or painting anything near the 4 foot by 7 foot painting that I would be attempting.

The results are decent but I am going to use the weather as an excuse and discount my lack of ability. I had to paint the canvases in cold weather and the acrylic paint was not drying very fast. I had a hard time blending the paint colors. I had to change the direction that I was painting in order to accomodate this. So, I am going to let the painting hang for about a week or so and then I'll see if I like it. If not, can easily be painted again and again.

As you walk through the markets in Busan or Seoul you will eventually get hungry. As you walk past the various restaurants you will see pictures of the food they serve and usually the prices of the meals. I noticed something very unique about the way that this restaurant serves its food. It uses a shovel as a bowl or platter. I have never seen or heard of this before. It definitely made me want to go in and eat there. I guess their idea works for bringing in customers. Unfortunately, I did not have the time to eat when I was in the area, so I have no idea what the food tastes like. Maybe I will find out on my next trip to South Korea.

I saw this small restaurant in the Hongdae area of Seoul. I was in the area during Chuseok and the restaurant was closed. I'm not sure what they serve, but I am fairly sure that it is spicy!

I think if I ever grow up, which is highly doubtful, I would like to be a Seoul taxi driver. Evidently they have a license to break every traffic law. Also evident is that they must break every law daily or lose their license. I always wondered how it would feel to break to speed of sound. I know now. Plus, I also know how it feels to break the speed of light (while driving down a crowded sidewalk). The taxi drivers in Seoul are fearless.

If you can survive the trip, the drivers can save you a lot of time and trouble when carrying luggage. I had to get to the express bus station on the far side of Seoul. I was going to have to ride the subway during peak hours with my bags. I was also going to have to change lines 3 times. I took the taxi and it cost me about $7 US. If I had kept my eyes open, I would have gotten a free tour of the city.

After being awake for over 36 hours and travelling for close to 24, I had a hard time finding my rental apartment. Even though the directions that I was given were perfect, I couldn't find it. I was supposed to turn at a certain convenience store. Unfortunately, there is one on every block and I turned at the wrong one. I walked up and down the streets for close to an hour hauling all of my heavy bags. I finally gave up and asked for directions. This is sometimes hard for a man to do. I noticed a young lady taking photos and asked if she spoke any English. Fortunately, she did. She was a student at the local college and lived in the area. She simply typed the address into her phone and led me to the apartment in a matter of minutes. Thank you for your kindness Miss Kyung.

By the way, renting an apartment was the best thing that I did in preparation for my trip. It was quiet and located in a prime spot. It was also cheaper than an hotel and had all of the luxeries of home.  I definitely recommend that you check out one of the apartment rental places like Airbnb or Bnbhero.

In the United States, some people believe that the number 13 is an unlucky number. In a lot of buildings, there is not a thirteenth floor. Most of time the elevator goes from 12 to 14. South Korea has a similar custom. However, they believe that the number 4 is unlucky. This comes from the Chinese symbol for death which is pronounced like the number 4 in Korean. The hotels handle this two different ways. One, the number 4 is eliminated. The other way, the number 4 if replaced with a large F. The hotels would book few if any customers on this floor. The Koreans can be a bit superstitious, but so can people in the United States.

Here is a photo of my favorite type of rice cake. I cannot find this in the United States, even though I live close to Korean town in Houston. This cake is full of nuts and who knows what else. It also does not have red bean paste which I have not develop a taste for yet. This type of rice cake is available almost everywhere. I bought this as a snack for a long bus ride. Along with a bottle of water, my Lonely Planet guide book, and my Ipod, the trip went quickly.

South Korean Coffee Shops 대한민국 커피 전문점

The people in South Korean seem to have a different coffee drinking schedule than we do in America. I usually go to be early and like to get up early and go to the local coffee shop. That really isn't possible in South Korea, though there are exceptions. Most coffee shops tend to open at 10 or 11 in the morning. I don't see the office workers holding coffee cups while waiting for the morning subway either.Coffee seems to be more of a social drink in South Korea. From mid afternoon to late in the evening, the coffee shops are full with groups of friends or coworkers sharing a drink or two.

You can get some some cold coffee from the refrigerated section in the small convienence stores. You can also luck into one of the coin operated coffee machines that are scattered around Seoul. These machines produce some suprisingly good coffee. However, the instructions are in Korean so you have little idea what you will be getting. So, coffee is available in South Korea, but you might have to make a few compromises based on taste and availability.

I am a little larger than the average sized South Korean. The odds of me finding any clothes or shoes to buy are about zero. This is an example of what I am talking about. This is a pair of bathroom slippers that was in one of my hotel rooms. By the way, just about every pair of slippers that you will find are this size. So, definitely bring your own slippers if you travel to South Korea. I was glad that I brought my own this year.

My Apple Ipod was invaluable on my trip to South Korea. I decided to wait until the night before I left to upload the latest operating system for it. Unfortunately, I didn't plan on it taking 6 hours to upload on my Ipod Touch and Ipad. That also included updating a lot of apps. However, it is absolutely ridiculous to take that long. I finished getting everything updated about 10 minutes before I had to leave for the airport. So, Apple, you owe me one night's sleep. I will accept some of your overpriced music as payment. Thank you for your business. By the way, thanks (NOT) for changing the Google map app to your sorry map app before I left. Thankfully, you came to your senses after a few months.

After I landed in Seoul, I spent the first couple of nights in the Hongdae area. This is the area around the local art college, Hongkik University. There are lots of interesting things to see, like the sign at this coffee shop.

My 2012 Flight From The United States To South Korea 한국에는 미국에서 2012 비행기

Recently, I returned from my second trip to South Korea. It is a long flight from Houston to Seoul. It took a little over 4 hours to fly from Houston to San Francisco. Then, I had a small layover of 1 hour. Next, it was a 12 hour flight to Inchon Airport in Seoul. It is not a fun way to spend a day. Even if I had the time and money, there is no way that I could make this trip more than once a year.

I flew on United Airlines again this year. There really aren't a lot of choices for this flight. I don't really have any complaints or any compliments. I do disagree with the baggage policy but I think most of the airlines have the same policy. I also disagree with the food quality and pretty much everything with the food service.

I did make one change to my flight this year. I bought the Economy Plus seats for the flight segments between Seoul and San Francisco. This added $129 each way, or $258 total. This was absolutely the best purchase that I made during my three week trip. The seats have 5 to 6 inches of extra legroom, which I need since I am 6 foot tall. It also really helps that the seat next to me was empty both ways. I was so comfortable that I actually slept most of the 12 hour flights. I did notice that the Economy Plus section was about half full, but the rest of the plane was fully booked. So, I think most people traveling alone in Economy Plus had an empty seat beside them. However, this is probably not true for every flight.

My airfare cost $1235 this year. Last year I paid around $1100. Most likely the airfare will continue to increase in the future. I did bring a lot less luggage this year. Last year, my second checked bag was free. This year it was $70. I had no problem washing some clothes in the sink and hanging them up to dry. Most of us pack way too many clothes when we go on vacation.

Unfortunately, getting to South Korea is an expensive, frustrating, and time consuming experience. But as I look back at it, I am pleased that I made the trip again.

I just got in from another 3 week trip to South Korea. The more that I explore it, the more that I love. I saw some amazing things, went to some interesting places, and met some fantastic people. I will be posting hundreds of blog posts and thousands of pictures as soon as I get rested from my trip.

I have just a couple more days and will be in South Korea. I have spent the last few days buying all of the little things I needed and packing a little at a time. It's been a little less than a year since I was there. I can't wait to try out my much improved Korean language knowledge. I look forward to engaging in some Korean only conversations unlike last year where I prayed everyone spoke English. By the way, most Koreans don't.

I will have a much easier time travelling around the country. I know how the subways, buses, and train work. I have favorite places to eat and places that I like to visit. The biggest change that I will make this year is that I will spend the majority of my time out of the Seoul area. After a couple days in Seoul to adjust to the time change, I will head out to Sokcho and Seoraksan National Park. Then, I will make my way to Busan, Kyeongju, Tongyeon, and a few other places in the area. I might travel to Jeju Island if I can somehow get on a plane. I could take the ferry, but 11 hours on a ferry does not sound like a fun vacation.

I will eventually find my way back to Seoul and the surrounding area. I want to go to the Anseong folk festival, Suwon, climb Bukhansan, and anything else that I find interesting. I will be there 20 days, so hopefully I will take my time, relax, and have fun. Lots of photos and interesting tidbits of Korean culture are to follow.

I recently read these two photography books. I think they are excellent. They are well written and have good example photographs. I like that the author made note of the focal length, the F stop, and the shutter speed for each photo in the book.

I am mainly interested in experimental photography. I enjoy playing around with the settings and I really like pushing the boundaries. I've taken thousands of boring pictures. One day, I want to take exciting photos. I get lucky sometimes. Every few hundred photos, I get a good one. I hope that the information that I learned from these two books will help me improve on that number.

Today, I was somehow able to update the firmware on my Canon 7D. It took a few tries but I finally have it installed. I'm not sure how well this forecasts my photography future in South Korea. The main thing that I want to do in South Korea is shoot photos. I kept thinking that I would take a photography class or sit down and study a book. That didn't happen and I am about out of time before I leave.

I guess that I'll figure it out like the firmware or just figure out how to get by. Having an expensive camera does not make you a good photographer. If you can barely figure out how to turn it on, then I guess you're not much of a photographer at all. Fortunately, I'll just take the book with me and learn as the opportunities come up. I know I'll miss a lot of great opportunities, but I also find a few others.

Last year I took my 17 inch laptop to South Korea. It is heavy and takes up a lot of room. I barely used it. Plus, every hotel room that I stayed in had a computer. Also, there are places to rent time on computers on almost every street (PC Bang). So, this year I have decided to bring my Apple Ipad. It will do everything the laptop does and then some. I can use it to take pictures and the apps, like the subway app, can be used on the go. Free wifi is readily available, including the subway.

I also took an Ipod Touch last year. I will be taking that again. It comes in handy on the long subway rides. The are very few people on the subway that don't have an Ipod or similar device. I am so glad that I will have more songs this year. Last year, I had around 40 songs, but now I have hundreds. Thanks to my friends who helped me out with that.

My plan is to only take one big suitcase and a small carryon. I think that I can take everything that I need for 3 weeks in those 2 bags. The 2 big bags and the carryon were just too much last year. Plus, I probably only used less than 50% of what I took.

A year has almost passed since I was last in South Korea. While I don't look forward to that long flight, I want the time to pass quickly. This year's trip will be much different from last year's. For one, I speak much better Korean. Going to 2 Korean language schools, doing 20 hours of homework a week, and working with 2 Korean friends, I am able to speak a little Korean now. Last year, I could say hello and thank you. I could also read, but my vocabulary was really limited.

Also, last year I spent time with some friends and I only got out of the Seoul and Songtan area a couple of times. This year, I plan to travel alone and explore the whole country of Korea. I am also familiar with the transportation system, money exchange, and food. As soon as I land at Incheon Airport, I will be able to get some Won, recharge my T Money card, and catch a bus to the hotel that I have decided to start my trip at. While I THINK that I am ready to travel, I KNOW that I will have a few difficulties along the way. Last year my motto was "I'm not lost, I'm on an adventure!" In reality, I was lost.

I've been downloading some Korean music from the Itunes store. I guess most of these artists are in the K-Pop genre. Most K-Pop music is horrible, at least to me. It took me hours to find some Korean music that I liked. Itunes does not make it easy to find Korean music on its site.

Here are some of the singers that I like. I'm around 50 years old, so you may think my music is horrible. I'm fine with that. I like these singers. I like Younha, Yangpa, Baek Ji Young, Ivy, IU, and Seeya. I don't like all of their music, but I found some songs that I liked. There are a few other singers that I found 1 song that I liked from them.

I would say that these singers are similar to Jewel, Alanis Morissette, Michelle Branch, Natalie Merchant, and all of the other American singers who specialize in ballads and folk music. Their music is a little on the slow side, which is perfect. I'm a little on the slow side. So, if you are looking for some Korean music that is out of the normal K-Pop ideal, you might want to check out some of these singers.

Last Intermediate Korean Class Of The Semester 학기의 마지막 중간 한국어 수업

I just finished the last day of Korean class for this semester. We also had our class party. I learned more this semester than any other, by far. We covered a chapter every Wednesday and another every Saturday. I had to do homework 7 days a week. Also, I learned to listen a little better since my teacher would speak as little English as possible in class. It also helps that I worked with a tutor almost every week. It was a great class.

I almost moved down a level after the first couple of days. It was unbelievably overwhelming. I'm glad that I stayed with it. We start a 15 week semester that begins in about a month. I also signed up for a school that is run by the Korean Consulate in Houston. It is held on Wednesdays. It is nice that I will be using the same text book and work book in both classes.

Currently, I am trying to speak as much Korean to my friends as I can. It is difficult and embarrassing, but I think it will help me gain confidence and enhance my vocabulary and recall. on the advice of a friend, I am even trying to speak with my cat and dog in Korean. They don't seem to care. All they want is to have their food bowls filled. Now, with some time off, is a difficult time to learn Korean. I think that I have come up with a way to keep up with my Korean practice. I plan to summarize every chapter in the 2 Dynamic Korean workbooks that I have. I am hoping that it will help.

Android Korean Keyboard 안 드 로이드 한국어 키보드

I have an Android  4g cell phone. It does not come with a Korean keyboard. It has just about every language except Korean. I would think that Chinese and Japanese keyboards would be much more complicated.

I was able to go into the Android App Store on my phone and download a Korean keyboard. Fortunately, it was free. Since I use a company phone, so I am unable to buy any apps. The name of the app is 한 Korean Hangul Keyboard (Beta).

I did have a difficult time downloading the app though. It was most likely something that I did. I also took me awhile to set up the keyboard. Still, it really only took 5 minutes or so. I still haven't figured out how to adjust the settings yet. You can get more than one type of Korean keyboard with this app. I am using the Korean keyboard that I am used to. However, there is another Korean keyboard that uses about half as many characters that you have to combine to get the full alphabet. I didn't like that keyboard at all.

I am really happy that I will be able to text my friends in Korean now. One of my friends wants me to try to text only in Korean from now on. I think this is a good idea. I need to use Korean more than just in class.

One of my Korean friends introduced me to Kakao Talk. It is an app that allows free texting and free VOIP phone calls with your cell phone or Ipad. All that you need is access to the internet. Also, the person that you are contacting must have the Kakao Talk app.

The app was invented in South korea, I think. All of my Korean friends use the app to communicate from the United States to their friends and families in South Korea. Basically, this app will send texts and make free phones anywhere in the world, as long as there is internet access. I also like that you can include pictures in your texts.

I have been using it on my Android phone. I haven't tried it on my Ipad yet, but I will soon. I can't recommend this app enough. It is going to allow me to communicate with my friends and family, here in the United States, when I am on vacation in South Korea.

Intermediate Korean Language Class Update 중급 한국어 언어 클래스 업데이트

We have a few more classes in our Korean language class this semester. This is the first Summer session that I have taken. We have class on Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning. We are covering 2 chapters a week, which I personally think is too much. It is good that I am forced to have at least 2 hours of homework every day. Sometimes, it is more like 4 hours. All of the hard work is paying off though. I am at least able to communicate on a basic level with those who speak only Korean. I look forward to continuing my education and hopefully getting much better.

Learning Korean is hard, especially for someone who is a little older and has work and other obligations. Still, it is fun. I also enjoy meeting the other people who have decided to learn Korean. I now count many of those as my friends. One of the best things about learning Korean is the food. We eat Korean food at class and we go out to eat at Korean restaurants. I love Korean food. As a matter of fact, I cooked Korean food tonight. I made a Korean soup that my tutor cooks when I go over to her house. It is called kimchi chigae. It was delicious.

Every semester, the class starts out with about 20 students. By the end of the semester, there are 5 to 8 people left. We are down to 7 now. This makes class so much easier. I need the extra attention that a smaller class size gets. The school that I am going to now usually has a student helper or one of the Korean kids' Moms to help out in class. For some reason, the classroom helpers spend about 80% of their time around my desk.

Last week, I bought a new hiking jacket. I walked into the local REI store and I was hoping that the winter clothes would be on sale. It is July! I got really lucky and the last  North Face jacket in this size and color fit me. It was 70% off the regular price. Needless to say, I am happy. While I won't be the best dressed hiker on any of the South Korean mountains, I will feel comfortable in a light rain or on a cold windy morning.

I went to South Korea in late September and early October las year. Every morning, you needed to wear a light jacket. Around lunch time, it became warm enough to take it off. So, this jacket will be perfect. Also, I am going to dress slightly better this year. My plan is to wear hiking gear most of the time. Then, my ultra casual clothing will be less noticeable. I think some of the South Koreans wondered how an American hobo was able to afford a vacation. If the airlines would ease up on the luggage limitations and bag fees, I would dress nicer.

I have some giant sunflowers that are starting to bloom. The plants are about 8 to 10 foot tall. The flowers are supposed to be about 18 inches across. I went outside to take a few photos and one of my favorite things to photograph appeared, a green lizard. These are really common in my yard. They eat bugs in my garden and spend their spare time as models for me. I have to practice a lot with my camera before I go to South Korea. There were settings that I wanted to change, but I forgot how to. I'll keep taking photos and looking up any problems in my camera book. Still, I may need to take a photography class or two before my trip.

A long time ago, there was a land called the Kingdom Of Darkness. It was pitch black and completely without any light at all. In the dark, people raised large, fierce dogs called fire dogs. Just as he arrived at the door of his house one cold, rainy night, he heard an old man speaking to him. "Please sir, could you spare a bowl of wine? Over the past 2 years, I've bought all of the main travel books for South Korea. You never really know a travel books value until you sit down and start the actual trip planning. Also, I am able to use what I learned in South Korea last and compare that experience to the books. Here are my ratings for the books. I place less emphasis on hotels and ding. I am looking for places, events, and directions. You may have a different opinion than mine.

The Michelin book on South Korea, "The Green Guide" is my least favorite. It has some good restaurant and hotel reviews, though it is lacking in the other areas of interest. There is only a light introduction on places and events, but almost no directions. I wish that I hadn't bought this one. Still, if you are looking for a restaurant and hotel guide, this book may be for you.

The "Insight Guides to South Korea" is in fifth place. It has slightly more detail that the Michelin guide. It has even less information that the Michelin guide on lodging and dining options. However, it does have beautiful pictures. Some of the pictures actually help me make up my mind about visiting a place or two. I'm glad that I bought this book, but wish it had more detail.

This is surprising to me, but I have to place "Frommer's South Korea" guide in fourth place. The differences between books 4, 5, and 6 are very small and could change depending upon which place I am looking to research.One of the best parts about Frommer's books are the little tips and hints that are like secret information passed between friends. This book has good directions, prices, and fairly good detail on places to go. The lodging and dining places are well described. Again, I am glad that I bought this book. This book is all that you would need to plan a good trip to South Korea.

I think "The Rough Guide To Korea" is in third place. I think the maps help place it above Frommer's book. It trys to cover less places, but discusses them in more detail. I do wish that it had a little more information on directions and fees. It doesn't have much information on lodging or dining, but that is fine with me. Again, you could plan a good trip with this book. I'm glad that I bought it.

I place the "Lonely Planet Korea" book in second place. This book has it all. It has maps, descriptions of events and places, directions, and fee. It has just the right amount of lodging and dining options. I have become a big fan of Lonely Planet books in the last year. All of their books seem to be of good quality. I definitely recommend buying this book.

My favorite book is the "Moon Handbooks South Korea". This was surprising to me. I had never looked inside a Moon Handbooks before I started planning this year's trip. Needless to say this book has it all. It also goes into much greater detail because it has a lot of pages, over 650. If I take a book to South Korea in my carry on bag, it will be this book. I would say that if you could only buy one book, you should buy this one. Basically if you take all of the little bits of information from the other 5 books, this book would it all and maybe another piece or two of information. I love this book and I'll continue to use it to plan my trip to South Korea.

Busan Trip Plan 부산 여행 계획

Busan was a little harder to plan for. There aren't any major attractions in the area. However, there are a lot of nice places to visit. Plus, I hear it is a fun town to travel to. I'll catch the KTX from Seoul Station. The trip takes about 2 1/2 hours and costs 47,900 Won. It is covered under the foreigner KTX Korean Rail Pass. You have to buy it before you leave for Korea. There are many options, but I'll buy the 10 day pass for 185,100 Won. The pass gives you unlimited access to the KTX train for the duration of the pass. It is a good deal if you will be travelling outside of Seoul.

I plan to leave Seoul early and arrive in Busan around lunch. I'll find a hotel south of the train station around the Jagalchi Fish Market. It is located on subway Line 1. First, I'll go to Yongdusan Park. I have to take the subway Line 1 to Nampodong Station. I need to walk 10 minutes from Exit 1. Busan Tower is located at the park. Next, I want to go to Taejongdae Park in the afternoon. There is an open air tram that I want to ride. It costs 1500 Won. To get there, take Bus #30 from Nampodong Station on Line 1. You catch the bus on the Jagalchi Market side. The park entry fee is 1500 Won. Finally, I'll head back to Jagalchi Fish Market to eat and take some photos.

The next morning, I'll take subway Line 1 to Oncheonjang Staion, Exit 1. At Geumgang Park, I'll take the cable car to Geumjeongsanseong Fortress. The ride costs 3500 Won, one way. I need to walk through the village and stay to the left. At the Y in the road, I need to go right to Seokbulsa Temple. Then, I need to go back to the cable car and walk 1.3 km to the South Gate of the fortress. I'll follow the trail along the fortress wall to Godang Peak. I'll then return to the wall and stop at the North Gate. From there, I'll walk down to Beomeosa Temple. The entry fee is 1000 Won. From the temple, I need to take Bus # 90 to Beomeosa Station on Line 1. In the afternoon, I'll go to Donghae Yonggungsa temple. I need to take subway Line 1 to Donghae Station. Across the street, I'll take bus # 100 or 100-1 to Seongjeong Beach. Then, I need to take bus #181 to the temple. Finally, I'll take subway Line 2 to Haeundae Station, exit 3 or 5. It is a short walk to Haeundae Beach.

The last day, I want to go to Jagalchi Fish Market around dawn and photograph the morning activity. I'll spend the rest of the morning down at Haeundae Beach on Line 1. Finally, I'll go back to Busan Station on Line 1 to the KTX station and travel back to Seoul.

This plan is pretty ambitious. I doubt I will be able to do everything as planned. Fortunately, I will be on vacation and I'll just stay another day in Busan.

I watch Korean dramas to help me develop an ear for the Korean language. It helps a little, but actually speaking with a Korean person would be much better. It is best when you turn off the English subtitles, but I hardly ever do that. I use the website www.dramafever.com . They have a great collection of current and older Korean dramas and movies.

I've watched two complete series and a bunch of single episodes. My first Korean drama was "Secret Garden". I highly recommend it. It is 20 episodes. Each episode lasts an hour. The next drama that I watched was "Daring Women". It had 105 episodes that were 30 minutes long. If a Korean drama can get better than that, I want to watch it.   I'm currently looking for another drama to watch. There are so many good ones out there, I'm sure I'll find another soon.

I found an app for the Ipad that has a good amount of Korean dramas and movies. The app is called "Viki". The app is free to download. I think the movies selection are a little better. Also, there are a lot of new dramas that I haven't seen before. I found a new 3 episode action drama that I started watching last night. It is called "Killer Girl K". It is about a young Korean girl who becomes an assassin. So far, it has been great. I definitely recommend the app for those who are interested in the Korean dramas.

I bought my first piece of hiking clothing today, my hiking boots. I went to one of my local sporting goods stores and found a deeply discounted pair of North Face hiking boots. They are perfect for this trip. They only had 2 pairs of these boots and fortunately one of them fit me. I think they normally sell for around $200 US, but I bought them  for less than $100 US.

I just need a couple shirts, a light jacket, and a pair of hiking pants. I don't plan on looking like the typical Korean hiker. I just want to be comfortable. I feel fortunate that I have been able to avoid any injuries at the gym. So, I should be in good enough shape to enjoy the hikes. Last year, I was so sore and tired from just walking the streets and all of the stairs in Seoul. This year will be better.

This is another segment of my next trip to South Korea that I have planned out. I thought it was a good idea to put this on my blog, in the event that I lost my notebook. I could then access my blog and have all of my notes. I  have to get on an express bus from Dongu Express Bus Station. It is located on line 2 at Gangbyeon Station, exit 4. The bus ticket should cost around 18,900 Won each way. The trip takes about 4 hours. The first bus leaves at 6:25 a.m.

After I arrive, I'll get a hotel near the express bus terminal. The first place that I'll visit will be Naksansa Temple and Park. You take bus 9 or 9-1 and the trip costs about 1240 Won. It takes about 15 minutes from the bus terminal. You exit the bus at Naksan Beach. The park is free, but it costs 2800 Won for the temple. After Naksansa, I'll come back to Sokcho and eat at the Jungang Fish Market. It is located near the harbor, north of the bus terminal. I'll spend the rest of the day taking photographs at Jungang and at Dongmyeong Port, which is located just south of Jungang.

The next morning, I'll go to Seoraksan National Park as early as possible. I need to take bus 7 or 7-1 to the park. The trip takes about 20 to 30 minutes and costs 1000 Won. I might take a taxi in order to beat the crowds a little. The park entry fee is 5000 Won. The park opens before dawn.I plan to hike Ulsan Bawi first. After that hike, I'll come back down and take the cable car to Gwongeumseong Fortress. If I can still walk, I might take another small hike. When I return to Sokcho, I plan to go to Daepohang Port on the southern end of Sokcho. I need to take bus 1, 1-1, 7, 7-1, 9,or  9-1. The bus takes about 10 minutes and costs around 1000 Won. I'll eat in the area and spend the rest of the day taking photos around the port. On the final morning, I'll explore downtown Sokcho until it is checkout time at my hotel. Then, I'll take the bus back to Seoul around lunch.

During my trip to South Korea last year, the item that I used the most was my subway map. You MUST have a subway map if you go to Seoul. You can pick one up at the airport or at a tourist office, but you can also bring your own. It is easy to print one or two of them off of the internet.

Since I have a new Ipad, I will carry one or two maps on it. I brought my small Ipod Touch with me to South Korea last year. I had the Seoul Metro Tour app on it. However, due to the small screen size, it was basically useless. I opened it up on the Ipad and it is fantastic. I can actually read the station names without my glasses. There was a small subway leg on the Songtan line that wasn't on my paper map. It is on the Seoul Metro Tour map. Also, the app is free. I will still carry a paper map. It will be hard to access the Ipad when the subway car is full.

I also have another Seoul subway app called Jihachul. It was highly recommended in the Itunes app store. It is amazing. It is much more than a simple map.
