In a small riverside village, there lived an old tavern keeper. He lived alone with a dog and cat. The dog guarded the door to the house. The cat kept the store room free of rats. People would travel from the other side of the village to drink his wine. Travellers often asked for a jug of his wine to bring with them on their journey.
There was something strange about his wine. No matter how much he sold, he never seemed to run out of wine. His neighbors were curious why they never saw any wine delivered to the tavern. They knew that he didn't make any himself. It was a secret that he only shared with the cat and dog. He had not always been a tavern keeper. Many years ago, he worked on a ferry. He took people back and forth across the river that flowed through the village.
Just as he arrived at the door of his house one cold, rainy night, he heard an old man speaking to him. "Please sir, could you spare a bowl of wine? It would help take the chill out of these old bones of mine." He invited the old man inside and said, "My wine jug is almost empty , but you are welcome to what is left." He emptied the jug into the bowl. But the stranger poured some of the wine back into the jug and then drank all that he could. "You have been most kind" said the stranger. "Please take this as a token of my appreciation," he said, handing him a piece of amber. "Keep it in your wine jug and it will never get dry."
He turned the amber over and over in his hands for awhile. Then, with a laugh, he dropped it into the wine jug.He thought that he could pick it out when he filled the jug the next day. Not much later, he got thirsty. "There must be at least a drop", he told himself. What a surprise he got when he found out the jug was full! He poured a small bowl and drank a sip. It was the sweetest, richest wine in the world. He drank the whole bowl and poured himself another, but the jug stayed full no matter how often he checked.
He was overjoyed. "How wonderful! Now I can open a tavern. No more ferrying people back and forth across the river." He did open a tavern and that is how it all came about. People came from all over to taste his wine. One day, he picked up his jug to serve a traveller. He discovered that the jug was empty. He shook the jug and did not hear a sound. He was confused. The dog asked over and over, but the cat couldn't respond. As they came to the other side of the river, the dog shouted, "Why don't you answer me? Do you still have the amber?" The cat was so frustrated that he accidently answered the dog. "Of course I still have it!" he said. Just then, the amber fell out of his mouth and into the river.
The dog was so angry that he shook the cat off his back. Somehow, the cat made it back to shore, at which point the dog chased him until he finally ran up a tree. The dog swam back to the spot where the cat dropped the amber. At that moment, he caught scent of the amber. The smell was coming from a fish that was caught by a fisherman just a little ways downstream. The fisherman never noticed the dog steal a fish from his catch. Carefully, the dog carried the fish home to his master. "That's a good dog," he said when the dog dropped the fish at his feet. "We needed something to eat."
