The area where these kilns are is Flagstaff, Arizona. They get a fair amount of snow every year. While the snow itself is not a problem for the kilns, ice is. The water from the melting snow can run into the cracks in the castable and the capping mix. The water refreezes, expands and increases the size of the cracks. This causes the potters at Northern Arizona University to do some repairs every year.
I have heard of a firing or two in the Winter time at the university. I'm sure it was never in conditions like these in the photos. The wood would have to be cut and stacked under cover before the firing. The last photo is part of the wood pile. I love to wood fire and I will attend every firing possible, no matter what the conditions are. However, in these circumstances, even I'll take a pass.
