One of young potters at the Northern Arizona University wanted a crusty pot. He placed one of his pots at the front of the firebox. We tried to explain to him that this wasn't a good area. The chances of it getting hit by a big log were great. Another problem with this area is that the pot can be buried by wood ashes early in the firing. The wood ashes insulate the pot from the heat and the clay won't mature.

I have made dozens of pots like his over the years. It is just a part of the challenge of getting a crusty pot. There is a saying that you must take to heart in order to successfully make these type of pots. "High Risk, High Reward".
