On my trip to South Korea this year, I will have 19 full days. I want to fully plan out around 10 to 12 days in advance. I just finished planning out a couple of those days. I will be travelling down to Mokpo and Wolchunsan National Park. Here is what I have found out so far. This information came from various blogs, websites, and books. I'm sure some of it may be out of date and some of it may not be true. However, I think there should be some good information in this post.
I will be staying north of Seoul near Miasamgeuri subway station. Miasamgeuri is on line 1. Early in the morning, I plan to take the subway to Seoul Station and switch to Line 4. From there I'll get off at Yongsan subway station. The KTX that leaves from Yongsan, travels to Mokpo. The trip costs 43,300 Won and takes 3 hours. However, the trip is covered under the KTX Korean Rail Pass for foreigners. The pass costs 185,100 Won and is good for travel anywhere in South Korea for 10 consecutive days. You must buy the pass before leaving for South Korea. It is best to buy the pass online.
The KTX in Mokpo is in the southern part of town. It is near the coast, downtown, and Yuldansan Park. The bus station is about 2 to 3 kilometers to the north. There are plenty of cheap hotels around the KTX station. You can expect to find prices in the 25,000 to 40,000 Won range.
Here is my schedule for the 2 days.:
Day 1: I'll leave Seoul in the morning and get to Mokpo around lunch. I'll find a hotel and check in. I'll explore downtown Mokpo until the afternoon. Then, I'll hike to the top of Yuldansan Park and take some photos with the setting sun. The walk from the train station to Yuldansan Park takes about 15 minutes. Afterwards, I'll find a place to eat seafood and explore Mokpo at night with my camera.
Day 2: After breakfast, I'll take a taxi to Mokpo bus station. From there, I'll take a bus to Yeongam bus terminal. The bus trip will cost 3,100 Won. The bus leaves once an hour and takes 20 minutes. At Yeongam bus terminal, I'll take a bus to either Dogapsa or Cheonhwangsa. They are the entry points to Wolchunsan National Park. The bus to Dogapsa leaves every 20 minutes. The ride takes 20 minutes and costs 1000 Won. The bus to Cheonhwangsa leaves every 10 minutes. The trip takes 15 minutes and cost 850 Won.
Once at Wolchunsan Park, pay the entry fee of 1,600 Won. The park is open from 5 am to 7 pm. The trail from Dogapsa to Cheonhwangsa is 9.4 km long. The hike takes around 6 hours to complete. The trail is called Gureumdari Bridge or Mountain Ridge Trail. The Gureumdari Bridge is also called the Cloud Bridge. This red metal bridge connects 2 of the parks peaks. The bridge is the highlight of this small park. There are some small restaurants at both ends of the trail. After hiking, I'll return to Mokpo and just have fun for the rest of the day.
Day 3: I will return to Seoul on the first KTX train in the morning.
WARNING: The Mokpo Grand Prix auto race will be held on October 14, 2012. This will make finding lodging, food, and transportation difficult.
