These pots were fired in the train kiln at Northern Arizona University in 2007. Since most of my wood firing experience came from there, so this is where most of my stories start at. We fired the small train kiln to excess. I don't want too say much about how this happened, but it did happen. I plead semi innocent with a touch of inexperience.

Not only was the firebox stoked too long but the kiln was side stoked way too much. At one point, the ember bed appeared to be almost to the roof in places. Carbon webbing or streaming was in evidence. It is actually pretty cool, but really bad for the pots. To sidestoke, bundle of wood trimmings are fed into a sidestoke hole. As they burn, they are pushed in. When they fall inside, that hole is closed and the next hole in line is fed. That is how it is supposed to be done anyway. Actually all of the holes were fed at the same time for most of the firing.

Another factor in having pots stick together is the loading. If you are expecting a lot of ash, use big wadding. At NAU, we sometimes use fist sized wads to keep the pots seperated. The results may not have been quite so bad if it was loaded differently. Since I don't like to go inside the kilns, it wasn't me. Here is a picture of the actual load stack of my 3 pots. They were loaded right at the edge of the firebox.

When you have to use a brick to seperate the pots, that is not a good sign. When the stack of pots could be used as an installation piece at a gallery, that is not a good sign. When the trash can is full after a kiln unloading, that is not a good sign. If you get a blog post written about how not to do something, that is not a good sign. Here the pots are being seperated by an independent party. This is how it should be.

This pot has many pieces of various pots and wadding sticking to it. Chunks of pots are missing. Still, it is pretty sweet.

The next 2 pots are stuck together. I really like one of the pots and have given thought to seperating them. Unfortunately, that never works out. The pot that you want the most will always be hopelessly destroyed.

The pots have a really thick coating of ash. The ash is pleasing to the eye. I just wish that they weren't stuck together. I also wish that other stuff wasn't stuck to them. I could remove the wadding. That would be no problem. Since they are stuck, I think it adds to the piece.
