I wanted to go into a little more detail on how the glaze on the bottles was formed. It is best to think of a wood fired kiln as "a river of fire". The pots in the kiln are like stone and boulders in the river. The river carries with it sediment and various chemicals. In a really long kiln, the flame from the firebox to the flame above the chimney can be well over 100 feet long.

The first few pictures are of the 3 bottles together. This will help show how the ash is deposited and how the gases react with the clay. The above photo is of the very bottom of the bottles. This side was facing down towards a kiln shelf. The lighter colors are due to extremely fine ash an reaction to the gases in the flame.

The second photo is of the right side of the bottle. There is a little more ash than the bottom of the bottle. There is little evidence of any reaction with the gases. It is there, only it is under the ash.

The above photo is the top of the bottles. It is here that the largest particles fall. The glaze is also thickest here. In a very long firing, this could be over 1/8 of an inch thick. If there is enough on the top and it is fully melted. It will cause drips to run down the side of the bottles. I will have more on that in a future post.

The next photo is of the left side. It is pretty much the same as the right. There is some differences due to how close the bottle was to the kiln wall or another pot.
