We fired three kilns at the Archie Bray workshop. First, we fired the train kiln. This is probably my favorite style of wood firing kiln. It's pretty much a tie with the anagama style. Here is the train kiln that we fired. I think Tara learned a valuable lesson when she told Liz and me to get it as hot as we could. It was long past 2400. That's all that I'll say about that!

We also fired the anagama at the workshop. The anagama is a little different than most other anagamas. It is really tall inside, but really short. I was told that it took more bricks than they thought. When they ran out of bricks, they just stopped there. Still, it is an excellent kiln that really produces some crusty surfaces.

The final kiln that we fired was the soda kiln. I must say that Tara can cook up some excellent smores. This was my first experience with soda. It was much different than I expected. I like it, I just don't love it. The Archie Bray soda kiln is as good as any.

In 2007 I started going to the annual Summer wood fire workshop at Northern Arizona University. It is located in Flagstaff, Arizona. I went back in 2008, 2009, 20010, but I missed this year so that I could go to South Korea. Every year, there is a 2 week long workshop. There are 5 to 10 separate wood firings. It all depends on which kilns are being fired. There have been times when 3 wood kilns were being fired at one time. Heaven! At the workshop you can make your own clay bodies, glazes, slips, or just bring your own. You will meet some of the best people on the planet and have a really good time. At the end, you'll have a pickup truck load of work to take home. The price can't be beat.

Jason Hess leads the workshop. He really knows firing. He also gives some excellent demos. In 2007, Steve Schaeffer led the workshop when Jason couldn't make it. Steve is also an excellent wood firer. One of the things that I like about the workshop is the freedom. Jason keeps everything on track, like the loading and unloading times. He also makes sure everything is safe. He usually bricks the doors himself. During the actual firing, it is pretty much up to the workshop potters. Jason does keep track of the progress and will help if there is stall. For the most part, we have the freedom to fire the kilns ourselves. Jason is in the photograph above. The double wide train kiln is my favorite. It is my favorite kiln EVER. The surfaces that it gives in a 3 day firing are unbelievable. If I could build any kiln for myself, it would be this kiln. It is a really tight kiln, so it is excellent for reduction cooling.

The little train was another kiln that I liked. It was recently torn down and replaced this year. I liked that you could get great surfaces by side stoking. I will admit that there were some times when this was taken to the extreme. I remember the last time that I fired it. It fired poorly due to all of the big cracks. Gene and I had a mission and we got it up to temperature, pretty much by ourselves. It was one hell of a battle to get it there. It was probably one of my most satisfying moments wood firing. The work that came out of it wasn't very good. It was highly oxidized and there were numerous cold areas in the kiln. Still, the cones met the shelves.

We also fire the small anagama, which isn't small. We once fired a reduction cooled load of pots where we added some extra pottasium carbonate. Maybe extra is not the correct word. A lot of pottassium carbonate would be more appropiate. There was a lot of blue, which is very unusual for a wood kiln. It mostly affected the porcelain pots and the iron clay pots were pretty good. Still, I love to experiment in the Summer workshop. If you only knew what other experiments go on. I'm sure that there are some that I don't know about.

There is also a double catenary arch kiln. It has 2 chambers that share a chimney. One or both can be fired at the same time. The left side is wood only and the right side is wood and soda. In this kiln, we get to stoke "4 footers" to help hold the wood on the grates. It is fun, unless you jam one that is a little too big in the door. I like the soda side of this kiln a little more. Both sides give a toasty look to your pot. These are good glaze kilns. They are fired multiple times during each workshop.

Now, for a serious kiln. The Tozan anagama is a big boy kiln. It requires a serious effort and a big pile of wood to fire. I feel it is an honor to fire this kiln. I look forward to firing it again soon.

There are two kilns at Northern Arizona University that I have not fired yet. The first is the Tozan Noborigama. There just isn't enough time in 2 weeks to fire it. It would take 2 or 3 days to load. It would take 7 days to fire and 7 days to cool. It would take 2 or 3 days to unload. One day I will go up and help fire it for some special event. I look forward to it.

The other kiln is the new switchback that was fired for the first time last week. It has a fire box and a chimney at each end. It is fired in one direction for most of the firing, then it is fired in the other direction. It is a pretty cool idea. I look forward to firing it next year.

I also get to fire some other kilns every once in a while. I have fired 2 other kilns this year. The first was Shane Tidmore's anagama. I was the fortunate potter that got to fire during an ice storm. No one could get there to relieve me. I will just let you know it was an experience. It is good that fire is hot.

I also got to fire Doug Peck's noborigama during the 2011 Mascabal woodfire workshop. I really like Doug's kiln. It has a MASSIVE firebox. It is the hottest kiln to fire that I have been around. It was also one of my favorite firings. I really enjoyed the people that I met there. I look forward to seeing them again in South Korea. I was also fortunate to make a really good friend there, Chae. Meeting her may have been the highlight of my wood firing experiences. Such is firing with wood. Always expect the unexpected.
