Torn Bowl Experiment 찢어진 보울 실험

Two years ago I made some bowls that I ripped and tore to give them a sculptural effect. They were a lot of fun to make. Bits of clay were flying across the studio. It seems like I am still finding bits of those bowls around the studio.

I used some homemade clay, another experiment, to make the bowls with. I think I altered a clay that I saw in a magazine. I assure you that this is not always a good thing. Still, it was a good learning experience for my first homemade clay body. Here is the recipe:

15%  Nepheline Syenite
40 %  Goldart
15%  EPK
15%  Helmar
15%  Tile 6
 6%  Feldspar Chips

I also added orange juice to age the clay faster, on the advice of a friend. I really, really, really recommend that you do not do this. The clay turned a light black color and smelled bad. Bad may not be the right word. It was actually horrible smelling.

I will write a post on how to mix clay at home without any special equipment. It requires a little muscle and a drill.

The bowls that I am showing were fired in the Tozan anagama during the 2009 Summer wood fire workshop at Northern Arizona University. The were in some really good locations on the front stack near the firebox. They were fired for 5 days.

Here are the bowls. I like the look. I just don't like the clay. There is way to much feldspar in the clay. The feldspar did have a good melt and formed some nice looking glass bubbles. Unfortunately, I added too much. The felspar is medium chunks of Custer Feldspar. I ordered it directly from Pacer Minerals in 50 pound bags. The clay body was very plastic, which helped in creating the torn look. However, the clay did not accumulate ash well. The worst thing about the clay is that it looks like burnt plastic. I can't say that I've ever admired a lump of burnt plastic. In some places, there is a purplish color from the iron, which is nice. In conclusion, I like the form of the bowls, I just wish that I had used a different clay body.
