I also fired this bottle in the double wide train kiln at Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Arizona. The kiln produces a wide variety of ash effects in the different kiln zones. This bottle was placed in the back of the kiln, near the chimney. It caught less ash but has an intense red flashing.

This kiln is fun to fire. It will also fire faster than you want it to sometimes. It has always been easy to get to full temperature, even when the wood was wet. I once fired the kiln by myself for over 12 hours all alone. I got so dehydrated that I lost my sense of balance and couldn't talk or see correctly. I don't do that any more. Supposedly I did that just for fun. Towards the end of the firing, we are adding a large wheelbarrow of wood to the kiln about every 5 minutes. It does get intense.

I really like this bottle. The red color is great. This was an unglazed white stoneware bottle. The color came from the fire only. The color is a little darker than the photo. It was a little late in the day when I took the photo.

The surge protector is a lot bigger than the ones in the United States. It is well made and I had confidence in it. I will admit to being a little nervous the first time I plugged it in. I made sure to only plug in a transformer instead of the laptop. It is better to lose the laptop transformer than the laptop itself. Also, it does seem that everything charged faster with the 240 volt.

I'm going to return to the original purpose of this blog tonight, pottery. I went to the studio and pulled out a few bottles and took some quick pictures. I need to start changing the direction of the blog back to pottery. This bottle was fired in the train kiln at Northern Arizona University at Flagstaff, Arizona. For 4 out of the last 5 years, I've travelled to Arizona for a Summer woodfire workshop. Every year we fire 5 to 10 wood kiln loads of pottery during the 2 week workshop. I'll be back there again this year during the last couple weeks of July.

This kiln fires hot. The wood is supported by metal bars just below the stoke hole. The wood is at chest level and when the door is opened, you really get a face full of heat. I should wear some protection, but I usually forget.

This is the double wide train kiln. This is the kiln that I love to fire the most. I have definitely produced some of my best work in this kiln. During the firing of this bottle, we did a reduction cool. Reduction cooling produces softer colors that tend to be more yellow, grey, and light brown. You don't usually have the flash of red or orange. To get a reduction cooled effect, you seal the kiln up tight as possible. Then, you continue to add small pieces of wood until the kiln cools down below 1500 degrees or so.

Also, we fire with pine. Pine doesn't contain many minerals and is not a good choice for reduction cooling. We are able to adjust the chemical composition of the wood so it is more like cottowood or elm. Both of these trees are good for reduction cooling. After the kiln hits about cone 8, we start spraying our wood with a mixture of water and pottasium carbonate (pearl ash). This helps bring out the blues and greys in the reduction cooled pots.

Here are 4 views of this bottle. I should mention that this bottle was put in the kiln without any glaze or slip. The clay is a white stoneware. The pot has some good ash runs and drips. You get some nice reduction cooled colors in the piece. Also, you can see some areas where the flame was swirling and painting the bottle with ash. Overall, it is a decent pot. Most people would not recognize this as a wood fired pot. They think that all wood fired pots are brown. Well, I happy to say they are wrong!

Should you rent a car and drive in South Korea when you are on vacation? No! No! No! I drive over 30,000 a year for my job. After seeing the South Korean drivers, I would never even think about driving there. As a matter of fact, I still don't understand how to go through an intersection with traffic lights. I spent a lot of time observing and I still have no idea what to do when the light is green and when the light is red.

Here are the general rules for driving through an intersection, the best I can tell. Red light means stop or go, your choice. Green light means go or stop, your choice. A red light with a green arrow to the left means that you can turn left, but also go straight if you want. If I had to guess, the drivers are going through the intersection, no matter what the light color is, if it looks like they can make it through the intersection without hitting another car or being hit.

There are also another couple of unwritten rules. Whoever is the bravest gets the right of way. Korean drivers will go through an intersection supposedly knowing that the other driver won't hit him. Also, the bigger your vehicle, like a bus, gives you automatic right of way in an intersection. I guess that think that everyone is smart enough not to run into them.

Also, Korean drivers love to honk their horns. I think this would be unnerving to a foreign driver. After a light at at an intersection changes to green, you have less than 1/10 of a second to move or you will get honked at. If you turn too slow, you will get honked at. Sometimes, you will get honed at when you don't drive through the red light. You will get honked at when someone tries to pass you and there is barely enough room for them to squeeze by. Basically, you are going to get honked at multiple times per mile that you drive. Even for all of the horn honks, I never saw anyone make an obscene gesture. Amazing. That would never happen in the United States. On the open highways, speed limit signs are just pretty numbers on sign. You can drive as fast as you want. You can't drive in the bus lane though. I never saw anyone do that.

For all of this bad driving, I saw suprisingly few accidents. I saw less accidents in 3 weeks than I see in a day or two in my hometown in the United States. Also, I never saw a police car looking for speed or traffic light offenses. If you absolutely want to drive in South Korea, I think you could rent a car in a smaller town and stick to the highways and smaller cities. The highways have a lot of toll booths, so even that might be a problem. My suggestion is to stick with the South Korean public transportation. It's inexpensive, dependable, and goes everywhere in the country.

My experiences may be different from yours. It could have been the many drivers of the vehicles that I drove in. I bought 3 books on South Korean culture that I read before my trip. Since I was staying in someone's home, I wanted to be proper. The books gave me some really good information that I was able to use in several social situations. I would recommend all 3 of these books. While the Koreans are very forgiving on the behavior of foreigners, I think they are impressed when you know a little about their culture.

Return To Korean Language Studies

My plan is to go back to South Korea in about 12 months. I also start Level 2 of Korean class in January or February. My plan is to pick a few words every day and study them for a few minutes throughout the day. After visiting South Korea, I have a much better idea of what  that I need to learn. In my beginning Korean class, we spent too much time learning about the names for items in a classroom like desk, gym, teacher and other similar words. We also spent a fair amount of time singing young children songs. While the class made speaking Korean fun, it provided very little useful help for communicating in South Korea. This time I'm going to learn all of the words that I should have learned. I am going to place less importance on sentence structure and more emphasis on learn nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs that I know that I will actually use.

No Stress Vacation 아무 스트레스 휴가

This vacation was the first time that I was able to disconnect from from the stresses of every day life. I did not have a phone. Even when I'm on vacation in the United States, I'm still tied to my work phone. I don't take calls all day, but I do return any that are important. My access to the internet and television news was limited to nonexistant. I was not able to access my email due to problems with the South Korean internet servers. About all that I was able to understand on the television news was the next days weather. I also did not drive a car during my vacation. I didn't have to worry about the bad United States drivers, though I did worry a lot about the South Korean drivers when I was a passenger. I also never had to set an alarm clock. The clock was just used to let me know what time I got home from my daily tourist activities.

It was nice to completely let go and relax. I think I could get use to it. If for no other reason, this would be enough for me to want to go back to South Korea.
