I saw many older Korean people who lived through the Korean War and the years that followed. I noticed that very few of these people reached 5 foot tall. Diet obviously had a major effect on their physical appearance. When there is war, there is no farming. Even those years directly following the war, there was little farming and little nutrition available to the people.
In South Korea, I could a steady progression of height of each following generation. Now, it appears that many of the high school and college age kids are in the 6 foot range. This goes for the girls as well as the guys. I think most people in the United States would have a hard time believing this.
Almost all Korean people are thin. The people that we would pick as thin in America would not be considered thin in South Korea. They do not appear to be malnourished, they appear to be in tremendous shape. Their diet of mostly vegetables, with some meat meat and fruit is what we should all strive for. However, I did notice another change that is just starting to occur. I am seeing some of the smaller kids becoming larger in size. I'm sure there are many factors for this. However, I wonder if the appearance of American fast food is having an effect. I guess that only time will tell.

Public Restrooms In South Korea 한국에서 공중 화장실
Occasionally, you are going to have to stop into a restroom. It might be at the subway station, the bus terminal,or one of the public restrooms scattered around Seoul. Every one that I visited, was in perfect condition. They must have someone cleaning them every 30 minutes, or the Korean people are very clean. I think it is a little of both. In America it is exactly the opposite. You pray that you won't have to go to the restroom unless it's in your home or place of work. You wonder if some restrooms have been cleaned since they were installed.

While I did not need it, I always carried a package or two of tissues. You never know if you might develop a stomach problem when you are in a foreign country. I did notice that the restroom at the bus station did not have any tissues. Always be prepared.

One last comment on public toilets, there is less privacy than you are used to in the United States. The door to most of the restrooms is wide open and when people are walking by, you are in plain sight. In the smaller restrooms, there is no place to hide from the people passing by. I never noticed anyone looking in, but it is just so much different from what I am used to. Also, when you are taking care of your business in the restroom, the cleaning lady will come in and go to work. This happened to me a couple of different times, so it seems to be normal. I guess that Americans are just too self concious. Maybe we could just relax a little more and worry more about taking care of our own personal business and caring less about what other people think.

One last comment on public toilets, there is less privacy than you are used to in the United States. Small Ceramic Art Exhibition Part 2 작은 세라믹 아트 전시회 제 2 부
After the opening of the exhibition it was time to go eat. While I had many great times eating with my 2 friends and even by myself, the meal that I ate at the Sosabeol exhibition and at this exhibition were a couple of the highlights of my trip to South Korea. There is something about sitting on the floor, knee to knee eating out of the same dish of kimchi that really bonds one to the group. Even though I wasn't able to participate in the conversation, I did not miss out on the fun. My 2 friends ate across the room with some of their close friends. I ate at a table with this couple and many others. I lost the piece of paper with their names on it. I am desperately trying to find it so that I can thank them for such an enjoyable evening.

Small Ceramic Art Exhibition Part 1 작은 세라믹 아트 전시 부분 1
I went to a nice pottery exhibition that my friend was entered in. It was a pleasure to be there on opening night and see all the people come into the gallery. Literally, hundreds of people showed up for the relatively small exhibition. During the opening I got to talk to a few people that spoke a little English. There was also a party style tea ceremony and they served the best rice cakes I've ever eaten. Without a doubt, it was one of the best art exhibitions that I've ever been to.
