The NCECA ceramic arts conference was recently held in Houston, Texas. My  favorite exhibition was held at North Harris County College. The head of the ceramics department is Roy Hanscomb. This is a sample of his work. He is a very talented potter. At one time he was an apprentice to Don Reitz. These pieces are large and were wood fired. I think they were made with a combination of slab work and coiling. However, it was hard to tell.

I have been to a great number of universities that offer ceramic courses. I can say, without a doubt that the students of Roy Hanscomb are the best that I have seen. Sure, many schools have a great potter or two. However, the potters at North Harris County College are consistently good and have been for years.
