King Sejong Statue In Seoul 서울에서 킹 세종 동상

Last year, I was in Seoul during the Chuseok holiday. It seemed like most of the stores and businesses were closed. I just walked around and looked at some artwork, visited a couple of palaces, and attended some music concerts. In front of King Sejong's statue was a celebration in honor of the king. It was fun to watch. Well, it was actually funny to watch due to the over the top acting. I still enjoyed it.

I will try not to act like a King Sejong expert, but here is what I know about him. King Sejong was responsible for the creation of the current Korean language. In his time, only the members of the ruling class and scholars could understand the Chinese language that was used in that time. The average Korean citizen was unable to read or write. This worried King Sejong. He wanted to create a language that everyone could understand. Even though he was opposed by the other leaders, who were afraid they would lose their power, he accomplished his goal.
