The bus trip takes about 4 hours. Fortunately, there is a rest stop about halfway. The bus rides smoothly and the chairs are comfortable enough that most people sleep the whole trip. I slept at least half of the ride. I believe that every traveler to South Korea should take a bus trip out of Seoul. You will get to see the mountains and farm fields. You will go through many small towns where life is much different from Seoul. To me, this is the real Korea.
You should bring your music, your travel book, and a snack on the trip. They will help you pass the time. You can bring as much luggage as you want on the trip. The luggage is stored under the bus. Also, you can bring a backpack or two on the bus. A lot of people will have a seat full of groceries or other items next to them.
Like I said earlier, the trip takes about 4 hours. The cost is around $15 US.The bus to Sokcho leaves from the Dong Seoul bus terminal. I had to take the AREX from Hongdae, take a couple of different subway lines and walk a short distance to the terminal. It wasn't easy, but my trip to Sokcho was one of my trip highlights.
